Crap I hope surgery can be moved up

Recommended Posts

I hit a big snag in my surgery plans and I am afraid I may not be able to get surgery at all. I am scheduled for 11/11 for my VSG. My husband carries the insurance for our our family and I also have Medicare as a secondary insurer. There are some changes coming to my husbands employer and we don't know what will happen with his job beginning 11/1. He may or may not have a job which means he may or may not have health insurance for the family. I have emailed my surgeons office to see if there is any way possible to get my surgery scheduled before the end of the month and I am waiting to hear back. I have done everything I need to and have been approved by my insurance. Grr, this really sucks and I am worried I just did all of this for nothing.

Call the doctor's office and speak with the person who coordinates his surgeries. Tell them what you need to do and why. This after all is a business. Good luck!

I agree! CALL CALL CALL the office. They also lose $$ without doing your surgery. Keep us posted! GOOD LUCK!

I have Medicare coverage due to disability. My husbands group health plan is primary because his company has over 100 employees. Honestly I can't afford what my20% coinsurance would be using Medicare only for the surgery. Both insurances together would leave very little out of pocket expense for me. I can't justify taking that much money out of our savings to cover a larger portion of surgical cost especially when my husband's job is not secure right now. It is just bad timing all the way around right now. I am sincerely hoping my surgeons office can squeeze me in somewhere before the end of the month. I need some positive news right about now.

CALL ASAP. If they see anything on the schedule right now before that date, make sure to ask to be put on a waiting list. Hopefully you can get it done before that date and then Medicare can take care of your post-op follow up appts. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!

I just called and left a voice mail for the coordinator and I also sent her an email last night as soon as I found out what was happening at work for my husband. Thanks everyone! I will keep you posted as soon as I hear anything!

Even if he loses his job you should still be covered under Cobra. I would start asking questions of the insurance companies now just to make sure how to keep uninterupted coverage in case of any contingency.

Yet another example of why we need single payer and to get employers out of the health insurance business.

Ok , I am still waiting to hear back from the surgeons office. I called human resources to get the details of when our coverage would end (last day of employment ) and an approximation of the CObra premiums (over $1100 per month). I will keep working to find a way to get this done and appreciate all of the ideas! Please toss out ideas and suggestions as you have them. I will try almost anything once.

I believe that you will get an answer soon. Just keep calling until they can tell you something. They are not really doing you a favor. You are your best advocate. Let us know what happens!

Yes, most people don't realize how expensive COBRA is. Most families cannot afford it. I wish you all the best with this process. I know how it feels to be mentally psyched and ready to do something this big, and then have it derailed. But stay positive and keep your head up.

Even at 1100, it seems like one month of Cobra would be all you need to get your procedure done. Depending on all the other variables it could be worth it.

I just got an email from the surgical coordinator and she is out of the office this week on vacation. She said she will look next week when she gets back to work and we will go from there. I hope this works out somehow. My biggest hope is my husband keeps his job and life continues in the current flow. I will dream big while I am dreaming!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
