Pain at Port Site

Recommended Posts

I am having significant pain at my fill port site and am wondering if others experenced this. I had my band put in in 2009. The spot where i have my port has always been tender, but now its actually painful. The pain started out like a dull ache right over the port but now its pretty significant - like a really bad muscle pull, and now the area over the port is super tender to the touch - my Dr. sucks and wont see me till 2 weeks from now so i am looking for some advise from forum members instead. anyone else experence this?

Just curious..... How close to the surface is your port? Some have lost so much weight, that the port can actually be seen.

My first thought is.....did you possibly do something to upset that area; bend over an odd way.....something that could have pulled the muscle the port is sewn to? I've had port pain at different times, but nothing so horrible that I called the doctor. This may sound weird, but if I'm constipated, I'll have sensitivity at the port site. It's nothing with the actual port, but when everything is so backed up, it puts pressure on that area. Mine is sewn at my waistline; a little bit to the left of my bellybutton.

You will probably get a lot of responses, but at the end of the day, your doctor is the only one who can tell you if there is an issue. You've had the band for quite some time, so if you've never experienced this before, definitely......see your doc. Does he/she have a nurse you can see sooner than he or she is available?

I get slight pain every once in awhile. I think I pull muscles when I am working out and don't realize until the next day. It usually goes away in 24-48 hours. I have not yet called my dr. I never have severe pain.

Hi - I get pain on my left side around my port if I try sleeping on my left side. I have also been suffering from grim pain deep inside, below my port. My band is loosened to give my tummy a rest. It's been a long haul and my surgeon does not know what is going on. Sorry, I diverted ---I would get in to your Dr. faster if it is getting worse. They usually make room for someone who is getting worse. Good luck!

You're banded in 2009...so I can only guess your weight loss...

Early on I started to experience sever sharp pains around my port...(I go to the gym and do crunches a lot)

I spoke with my Dr. and he explained it to me this way.....

At surgery, my port was stitched - anchored to my abdominal muscle wall, to prevent it from flipping, etc....

As I loose weight, and as my stomach shrinks and gets tighter, it will pull and tear withing those muscles....but I should not worry, it will heal and be fine....

That was all within the first 2 years, after I have lost all my weight and continued sit ups, etc, getting my stomach rock hard. Since then it's been OK....

But you have been banded in 2009...so I could not guess what it is now....unless you just started to exercise and your weight loss has been very slow.....

Also I read so many posts about flipping ports, I wonder if my Dr. is unique in this procedure....

I was banded in Nov 2012. I initially started working out a little before my first fill. Felt like I pulled something while working out and had enough pain that I emailed my Dr office. She thought I had maybe pulled a stitch or something, and not to worry. Went in for my first fill a couple of weeks later. Port was tilted, so the pain was apparently from the stitches pulling out of the muscle. It is still tilted, but thinking about having it fixed this winter because it does stick out a little and I don't like the thought of it being able to move around in there.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
