Anyone else having a case of "The Lasts?"

Recommended Posts

First Congrats to all and your upcoming surgeries!!! I think almost all of use went thru this, but guess what it's not the last time for some yes they will never eat some things again but for others they will. Surgery does not always produce dumping and you will be able to eat way to many calories in a day if you don't fix the problems that got you to this point.

Some people have medical reasons for gaining weight but others don't, I am 11 months out and every day is still a struggle I don't dump and although I eat way smaller portions I have had bad days emotionally where my calories add up, now your probably saying "well that's not gonna happen to me because I will never eat those foods again after" believe me I said that pre also but when you struggle with food addiction, an emotional eater and a busy life it's very easy to lose focus... your food demons need to be addressed...best wishes

Thank you Truckerchic, it is a good reminder that after surgery it is important to use all the tools and making wise choices and that everyone can find away to eat around the surgery and we each need to come to terms with that.

had a bad day and with the case of the lasts going on, I almost did myself in.

I work in my car, some days it is 12 hours or more. Today was a 12 hour day and under stress from outside forces I let get to me. I stopped and bought a smoked sausage from the salt lick sausage company, oh so yummy. Then they were giving samples of sweet and salty pecans, and I bought a pound bag, what the heck was I thinking. Then a friend brought me some salmon and 2 chocolate covered strawberrys.

So, I threw away half the bun from the sausage, I had about 8 of the pecans and gave the bag to my son and his friend to take out of the house, and I ate the salmon and the strawberrys are in the fridge, planning to give to my boyfriend tomorrow.

I was not as bad as I could have been, but wow, I have not had a day like that where I tried to sabotage all my hard work. Thank you for reading my confession :)

I did the same thing. The last thing I ate was the best sandwich and worst for me an Ooey-Gooey cheeseburger. It's a half pound burger with a ball of cheese cooked inside.post-234841-14120783515593_thumb.jpg I want like this is my last cheeseburger for long long time.

Omg, I think if you eat that cheeseball burger, it might just be your last meal EVER. Lol, I've never seen something so crazy. Good luck with that and I hope you don't suffer a heart attack. Lol

no heart attack but it took me forever to finish. I can't remember the last time I ate a 1/2 pound burger.

I am checking in to see how my fellow September 30th surgery date people faired.

I am in pain. So much pain. Wow, I didn't know it was going to hurt this much.

Is anybody else experiencing this? It does go away, right?

I had a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream as my last big splurge. It's funny, but that was something I have craved and enjoyed so much in the past and that last time just wasn't very satisfying.

Now that I'm 10 days post surgery, I'm not craving anything sweet - in fact I'm a little sick of sweet with all the Protein shakes. What I want now is savory flavors to counteract the sweetness of the shakes. I am on full liquids now, working up to puréed and find that it all gets easier as you heal. There are still adjustments - had my first "oof, that was one bite too much" today as I ate a scrambled egg.

Hang in there! It does get better!

Hi everyone.

this is my first time posting and very new to this support group. I have my surgery (RNY) scheduled for November 5th and set to start Optifast on October 15th. I'm so excited a little nervous too but I'm going through this little phase where I think, "last time for this, last time for that," thing. Like eating at my favourite restaurant for the last time, having a girls wine night etc.. I'm hoping I'm not the only one that has done or who is doing this? I think it's a pretty realistic thing to do considering the massive changes up ahead. Anyone with me here? Lol

Oh my goodness, I've been having, "my last time," moments off and on for last 9 months. I just found out today that my surgery date is November 24th so I'm sure I'm going to have a lot more before my pre-op appointment. LOL

Best of Luck to you on your journey!!!

My husband had RNY a few years before me, we jokingly called it our "farewell tours". But I do see now that my husband can eat just about anything in small amounts - it's not the end of good eating, but it will be a while and it will always be different. (and much smaller portions!)

The week before my pre-op diet began, my husband and I went on a farewell tour of our favorite restaurants. Didn't gorge or anything, but it gave me a chance to review their menu and decide what I could have when I'm back to solid food. Calling it a farewell tour made me feel like a rock star and not sad at all.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
