Having My Band Removed

Recommended Posts

Congratulations on your diagnosis, I guess! :)

Seriously, I hope you get the approval for the RNY and that it is smooth and easy. Fingers crossed!!

Thanks, Alex. You've always been such source of support; now I have no idea why I temporarily left the board when I was gaining so much weight back.

So, since this topic is "Life After Band Removal," I can keep you posted even after it's out, right?

Had endoscopy Wednesday --I've been such a busy person, you'd never know I have a full-time job--I'm grateful for Blackberries & laptops! All is fine, just a tad of reflux, which Nexium used to control completely, but now my insurance doesn't cover. By the way, I don't have symptoms of reflux, but the doc could tell by bile presence. None of the other PPI's seem to work as well. Band is fine, in perfect position, no slippage, etc. So ironic!

Have a great weekend!

Karen

Hi, Just wanted to tell you about me!

I had my band remove 12 weeks ago due to mrsa. I am very sad. Life is hard for me because I have to diet. I no how u are feeling. U just need to take each day at a time. I live in the uk. I had to self fund my band. Our health service here would not fund the band for me. I have lost throusands of pounds and my best mate.

But i am alive. Mrsa kills. But it did'nt get me ( Thank god)

So hang in there and good luck.

Mrs D

Thanks, Mrs. D. I'm so glad you're o.k., that's, of course, the most important thing! I googled MRSA--Is it a staph infection?

Hi eveyone.. I haven't been here in quite a while. I have to have my band removed. I've had Nutcracker Esophagus, which is not caused by the band, but does not allow fills (they always close up) for about a year now. I have no fill now, have some restriction on good foods (tuna salad???) but have just been going hog wild on the bad stuff.

No excuse, but through all this, my husband's been sick, unemployed, and now will probably need a liver transplant.

Saw a wonderful doctor last week & without question, the band has to come out, and I decided to go for RNY. I had been down to 158, now I'm up to 203 again (high was 232) I am so disgusted and unhappy.

I must stress that I loved my band. If used correctly, filled correctly and not abused, I feel that it is a wonderful tool, and had I not had this problem would have continued as a happy bandster

Thanks to all of you for your past support, and I know you'll be pulling for me now

Thanks Karen for sharing your story. So sorry for your troubles with Nutcracker esophagus and losing the band. I will be banded on July 23rd and I can't wait. I am getting soooo nervous and even asking myself if I REALLY want to do this. I keep coming up with the same answer........YES. That is not to say that I am not scared of the complications that can arise but I keep telling myself they are rare and the band can be a wonderful tool. Good luck to you on your rouxenY surgery. I hope recovery goes very well for you. You are definately a fighter. I have thought many times what will I do if this doesn't work and I keep telling myself...this has to work this is the end of the line for me and I WILL make this work. Since being approved by insurance on the 20th of June I have lost 7 lbs. :whoo: Not sure if it is just because it is summer and I am more active or if I am subconsciously getting myself into the mode. I prefer to believe the latter.:D

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
