It's getting close and I'm starting to wonder - what do you think?

Recommended Posts

I started my journey toward gastric bypass about a year ago. Started at 260#, diabetic, hypertensive, inactive. I am now five weeks out from surgery and am wondering if I should go ahead with it. I have lost 40 pounds on my own in four months, with another 70 to lose. My concern is that I am 68 years old and wondering if the surgical risk at that age is out weighed by the weight loss benefits. I'm thinking of putting the surgery off for six months to see what else I can accomplish with the new tools I've learned in the last four months. I have my pre-op appointmentt next week and plan to talk it out with my surgeon, but want some input from the pros - you guys. Thanks.

I am 66 years old and I had the surgery a little over a year ago. I lost 110 pounds. My diabetes and high blood pressure went away almost immediately along with some other medical issues. I would do it over again in a heartbeat. My stamina has increased to the level it was at when I was 35 years old. Over the past couple weeks I moved 40,000 pounds of gravel by hand and didn't think much of it.

That's a hard question to answer. I guess I'd ask myself if I've lost before, was I able to keep it off? What are you doing differently now that's making the weight loss work? Is it something you can sustain? Are you co-morbids getting better? I also had High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. The night before surgery I took my last cholesterol pill along with my last dose of diabetes meds. At 5 months I took my last HBP pill. I'd do it all over again, regardless of age.

I am 66 as well. I am schedule for surgey for Sept. 16. I know there is risk - but my view is thee is significant risk with being overweight. I have prepare by getting my will updated, my power of attorney, my health care power of attorney, etc. As to other less than mortal outcomes. Carrying around this excess weight brings its own set of mortality risks. I am not a pro - but I am in the exact position as you and I have decided that the potential benefit it is work the the extremely small risk

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
