How to expand my sleeve a bit? It's too tight!

Recommended Posts

I am about a month out and have a 36 bougie over stiched. So it's basically a 34. Even after I requested the doc to make my sleeve a bit bigger I feel it's too small. I have had some problem with throwing up a couple of times. even liquids take time and feel a discomfort when drinking. I am afraid i am not able to get my full protien at this time.

Can anyone suggest how I can naturally relax and expand my sleeve so i can comfortably eat and drink without feeling pain and discomfort. Thanks

Your sleeve will relax over time. You are so new out, you should not be able to hold more than a tablespoon or two of food at one time, nor will you be able to do much more than sip sip sip liquids right now.

I can't tell you how to feel but I am grateful for my super tight tummy. Eating in bulk was what put me here in the first place and now, at almost 16 months out, I am so glad that I can only eat 2-4oz at any one time. I still vomit from time to time if I eat something too firm, eat too big of a bite, eat too fast or take one bite too many.

What is your capacity? What did you doctor tell you to expect your capacity to be?

Bougie size and sleeve size doesn't really vary that much. My sleeve is about the same as yours at a 36. See the picture.

I am acutally not sure whay my capacity is at this time since it's only been a month. I can barely eat 3 spoonful at a time. And i really don't like to vomit. I want to live a healthy life. That was the whole point of getting this surgery.

I am still looking for some tips to relax and expand my sotmach a bit?

I don't like to just eat 2 or 3 spoonful only to find out that I am hungry after 1 hour. My job is hectic and I don't have time to eat every hour.

My goal is to eat normal 3 meals a day and maybe 1 snack. That is something I can live with.

The Dr's surgical technique has more impact than bougie size, or so I'm told. It will relax some over time, but if it's really too small or you have a stricture or whatever, I think the only ting you can do is have your surgeon stretch it. I think they can do it like they do an EGD, but you should talk to a professional if it's that big a problem.

I'm not the expert by any means but it may be possible that you are not totally healed as of yet and may still have some swelling at this point? Good luck.

I agree with the fact that over time, everyones stomach relaxes, no matter how big ur bougie was. I'm 13 mths out and long for the days when I could take 4 bites and be full.

Ur only a month out. I was still on liquids for 4 weeks, soft for 4 weeks. U can't really tell how much you'll be able to hold till ur eating solid food. And u still have swelling from the surgery.

Totally normal to only eat a couple bites. I got hungry within 90 mins after a meal. Always had to eat something. That will change once ur able to eat a little more.

So thankful that even after 13 mths, I'm still only able to eat a small amt. Good luck to u!

yes. that is a big possibilty. I really need to be patient and give it couple more weeks or even a few months. Everyone who is 6+ months out says they are able to eat a lot more than when they intially started out. So, maybe I should that is as an addeded advantage to loose the extra weight for the next 5 or 6 months.

Thanks Marci for your encoraging words!! I mean dont get me wrong I still have about 75 pounds to loose. I have been a slow looser so far but doing okay with it. My goal is to loose 7 to 9 pounds a month until I get to goal. In fact I don't mind taking a full year to loose the weight.

My surgeon did the over-stitch thing too. They are dissolvable stitches, and I could literally tell when they dissolved. I went from only being able to eat 2-3 bites, to eating 1/4-1/2 cup at a time. It was around 2 1/2-3 months for me. But my advice, like everyone else's, is to not wish these first months of weight loss away. I am 4 months out, and my loss has already slowed to 0.5-1 pound per week. Not that I'm complaining, I wouldn't be losing anything if it weren't for my sleeve, so I am grateful. But sometimes I miss the days when 2 or 3 bites filled me up!

take advantage of this time to lose weight. trust me in time you can eat a lot more! I am 18 months out and had a slice of pizza and 3 oz chicken parm for dinner tonight (I just did 20 mile spin class though).

at only a month, the swelling hasn't even gone down completely yet! even if he could, your surgeon won't even try to "make it stretch" until you are much further out unless it's a stricture and it sound in your case you can eat just not a lot

I had the same problem. I had to graze a bit in the beginning.

Thank you all for your wonderful feedback and support !! :)

It has really been a learning curve for me. Honestly, going into this surgery I only knew I wanted to loose weight for good health and also to look and feel good. I have learned so much just being a month out now from this forum.

What you have described sounds quite normal at your stage. In fact, I think I could not finish an entire egg (without any additional food) until 6 months. At your stage I was stuck at appx 400 calories per day as getting liquids in was also quite difficult. I think your goal of three meals is appropriate... and at about 12-18 months past surgery you are likely to attain it. In the meantime, use shakes to increase calories. You won't be able to get your calories or Protein sufficiently thru solid food for a while yet. It's true regardless the size of your sleeve as the swelling lasts for so many months. I wish you the best! You can do it with careful planning and it is SO worth the effort.

There are really no tips or tricks to relaxing your sleeve. It's not going to relax. It is incredibly swollen right now...red, irritated, swollen, healing. Only time will allow you to eat more.

Around week seven I could tell the swelling had gone down. Suddenly I could eat more quantity, albiet still a very small amount. I can't tell too much of a difference between weeks seven to week thirteen.

Also...you may want to double check with your nut about the three meals + one snack per day. Most doctors orders I've observed are for six small meals per day. It is very challenging for me to eat that many times per day but I notice I feel SO much better physically if I can do that.

Good luck! Keep reading. You'll learn a lot from these forums.

My sleeve is about 250ml think that's about 8/9oz in US. I am on soft stage at present, I am worried that I can eat a little more than that though. Everything tastes the same to me as before surgery. I can tolerate any Protein Drinks, Vitamins, any food as long as it's soft, haven't tried anything that isn't soft yet. Can drink heaps of fluids without any feelings of restriction pressure. From what I've read my experience appears to be much more plain sailing than many others, I'm just worried it's all a bit too easy and I'm getting too much in given that I'm only four weeks out and my sleeve will relax a bit more and make it easier to eat / drink. Does the game really change when you get to solids ? I wish I could only get sips of fluids in and a couple of spoons of food :-(

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
