I don't know which surgeon to choose!

Recommended Posts

I'm stuck and need to pick 1 surgeon! I'm between Dr. Schmidt from advanced laproscopic (paramus, nj) or Dr Biloff Garden State bariatrics (milburn, nj) ! Please help! I'm a bit overwhelmed and I don't know whom to go with.

This is a very personal decision. I looked into both of those surgeons and eventually went with Dr. Bagloo at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. I'm so glad I did!! The experience has been nothing short of amazing. She is a wonderful surgeon and the nutritionist at Valley is also outstanding. Wonderful program.

I converted one other patient to Valley a few months back who went to Dr. Schmidt and thought they were a little pushy. She's also glad she went to Valley. I kind of think of surgeons as a "you'll know when you find them" kind of deal. If you're unsure, keep looking.

Dr. Bagglo is she part of coe? So they also have a nut in house? Yea I know! It's been hard.. I hear nothing but good things about both doctors but 1 of the doctors is so popular I'm afraid I won't have real 1 on 1. So what exactly made you go with dr Bagloo?

I was a revision from Band to Sleeve. When I had the band I had an internationally known surgeon do it, I am sure it was technically perfect, but I had crappy follow up. When I had the sleeve, I picked a well known practice that was built around patient success. The surgeons are wonderful, but in the end, I feel it was the NUT and others that made a huge difference. My vote would be for the one you feel the most confident about follow up (assuming they both have good surgical reputations).

My sleeve surgical practice has a mandatory 2 year follow up. when I hit that milestone they told me I had graduated, but was always welcome to be checked or to come back for support, follow up, reassurance.. or whatever. I feel part of that family in a way.

Yes, Valley Hospital is a CoE and they have a NUT in house. :) All the surgeons there are wonderful. I chose Dr. Bagloo after researching her career and education for awhile, and she sounded very competent. She also took the time to answer my questions during the initial visits and didn't rush me. Very caring person and really takes the time to spend with her patients. Dr. Schrope, the director, is also a very good surgeon.

I went with Dr Schrope at Valley who is in the same group as Dr Bagloo but I have never met her as I think they work different days. Dr Schrope is very good too and happy with my small entry holes which are almost invisible now if that is of interest. They are performing mainly VSG now and they have a NUT on staff. Take care and sure whomever you choose it will go well.

Annah, sorry if I confused you, no they are the same thing, VSG stands for Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy but usually people shorten it to say they have been sleeve'd or they have had 80% of their stomach removed to create a small sleeve. Let me know if there are any other questions you have, it has been an amazing experience for me as I was lucky and had no complications and lost 100% of my excess weight which is above average but seems to be a common experience for people on this site.

Thank you NJVSTuser. But you mentioned something about small incisions? What is the name of the office or hospital they are a part ?

Dr Schrope and Bagloo are based at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and in Manhattan too at Columbia. I had the operation at Valley with four very small incisions for the tools and one longer one that the stomach is removed through. Some surgeons are using a technique with one hole through the belly button but didn't have that myself.

I see a lot of medical doctors and they all recommended advanced laproscopic team as the team to go with at the moment. Im happy with that team and you get a nutritionist forever which is cool.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
