When is popcorn okay?

Recommended Posts

popcorn was one of my many sliders as a lapbander.....so I am curious who can tolerate it as a sleever? I am a little more than a month out and a handful would taste amazing. I am not one to push limits or break the rules....but I am also very scared to try popcorn ever again, given the consistency. Just curious what other sleevers have done.

i had some this past weekend, will be 7wks out tomorrow. appears to be a slider for sure! going to have to be disciplined about going to the movies and portioning at home! tasted awesome though, and saw the surgeon last week and i specifically asked him about a few foods including popcorn. he said no problems, no restrictions, just try to watch portions...

popcorn is fine as long as you don't over eat it. I ate some last night at the movies. I was sleeved on June 18,2014. Just be careful if you get a kernel spit it out. Good luck on you journey.. Hugs from Alabama....

No experience here, but I have seen popcorn referred to on many threads as "slider food."

I didn't try popcorn till around month 9 post-op. Only because I was eating so few calories and needed as much nutrition as I could get per calorie. I was only able to eat about 1/2 of a hundred calorie micorwave bag of popcorn the 1st time and Frankensleeve DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL! :P It was several more weeks before I tried it again and it did take till about 1 year post-op before I didn't get complaints from my new stomach anymore.

popcorn is actually on the list of foods that I can't have for at least one year. I used to eat a ton of it, so it's probably a good thing for me that I can't have any. Another thing I have to stay away from for a year are pineapples and I really miss eating them. I can have canned ones, but no fresh ones. Anyone else have pineapples as a food restriction?

I eat popcorn, both homemade at home and movie popcorn. Don't do it often and usually only about 1/2 of a Cereal bowl size. I used to eat a ton of it at each sitting. Does not bother my sleeve. Actually helps with my constipation! If I eat it at night, the next day..... Well you get the idea.

Thank you to each of you. I'm not a brave go'er so as much as I love popcorn It may still be awhile. But I feel a bit better knowing it's not too much of an issue with the majority. All people are different though.

Thank you for all the input to such a specific question ;-)

I was restricted from popcorn for 6 months. The theory is seeds/kernels could get stuck in your staple line. I don't know about that, but I never attempted it.

Anyway, I started eating skinny pop...bad plan. It's a slider, and it's something that keeps calling my name. I've noticed on weeks that I have it in the house, I do worse in general. So, now I rarely buy it - I call it a gateway food, lol! First it's skinny pop, then it's caramel cheese corn....you get the picture.

I have eaten popcorn as early as 4 weeks post op. I haven't had any problems; in fact, the only problem is realizing when to quit because its really good. Unless your surgeon tells you otherwise, OR you know something that we don't know, I don't think it should be a problem. Enjoy!!

Ok, so my two food addictions were coffee and popcorm. The coffee I went cold turkey when I started my pre op and I wished death would claim me the first 6 days. I basically took to my bed and stayed there. Popcorm...... home made with olive oil and no salt or light sea salt. It was my comfort food...all year round. My surgeon forbids it..period. Will I eventually try it one day? Maybe when I'm over a year out. I have enough coffee and popcorm in my pantry to open a small store.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
