How about your jewelry (rings) after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Still not feeling good but trying to think of other things.

My engagement. My fiance proposed to me on Easter this year. The ring fit perfectly, well a little loose because he waited three months to give it to me from the time we picked it out. After that I was still losing weight and it got loose to the point that I needed to get speed balls, if you've heard of that.

Two raised balls of white gold on the inside of the ring on the bottom part of the ring. It helped pretty well, maybe even just a little tight. Since the surgery I haven't really worn it much because I just haven't felt well.

I put it on today and it just falls off.

We are getting married next fall and I know I am going to lose more weight between now and then.

I guess at some point I am going to get it resized but I wanna wait until....much closer to the wedding.

I guess I can have the speed balls made bigger for now.

What did you do? Are you having the same problem?

Another of my issues is my RA, sometimes my joints are inflamed and my knuckles are bigger. This is why I hate to get it much smaller.... I just don't know!

The picture is before surgery.post-217704-0-70998300-1407706003_thumb.jpg

Never heard of a speed ball in relation to sizing a ring, please explain...

And I am from Fairfax Co VA originally, thought it might be a local term, but we are from the same area.

Sorry, it's called speed bump.

Pik,

Speed balls can be very uncomfortable if made to big.

My engagement ring and wedding band are so big that I can't wear them.

I don't plan on resizing my engagement ring until I'm well into maintaining my weight. Maybe a year from now I might.

Like you said you going to wait until next year to have it resized and I think that's the smart thing to do.

You could always get a temporary ring that's adjustable in the band and wear that.

Whatever you do be happy and feel good.

I just want to be able to wear it without the fear of losing it, ya know? He spent a pretty penny on it and if I lost it I would feel so awful. But I want to wear it!

Wow - what a beautiful ring! No wonder you want to wear it :) Both my wedding ring and my engagement ring are too big for me - I still wear the wedding band but not the engagement ring - we were poor when we bought them so it's not too valuable. For our 30th anniversary last year, I bought my husband a new wedding ring so he wants to buy me a new one when I'm ready - maybe next year. I'll have to have the engagement ring resized.

BTW - a speed bump sounds better - a speed ball is used by drug users! :)

Well thank you very much!

At my jewelers they have called it both things. I have no idea what drug users say,so forgive me.

I am wearing it right now and it just keeps turning..... =/

I am having that problem as well ! I originally wore a size 7 1/2 and after I lost all my weight my ring size is down to a size 4 1/4. They told me after sizing it down to a 5 that they cannot size it any lower or it will loose the integrity of the ring and the stones will start to fall out and that I can either get the bumps put it or add gold to the band to raise it up. I haven't done either one yet.

Shop around at some larger, well respected jewelry stores. I just had mine resized (RNY ON 6/25/13; total weight lost 205 pounds). My ring size went from a 7.5 to a 5.25. For the months in between I had them put on a sizer. It worked great for me and only cost $15.00. I did take my rings off when I showered or had my hands in Water, but I was able to adjust it as my hands got smaller. I will be married 20 years next month, it was important to me to be able to wear my rings.

My rings hadn't fit me in years.so I had them made bigger so I could enjoy them. It was expensive but worth it.then I had my surgery now they are too big. I'm also waiting until I loose all my weight also.

I have a tungsten wedding band. I bought the warranty plan that included getting a new ring if I needed a smaller size. Tungsten cannot be sized. I am going to wait until my weight stabilizes before I order another one. I get most of my rings from the epiphany line from QVC. It cannot be sized because it's platinum plated. I do have one real gold Diamonique ring that will have to sized. I can't wait to be able to wear a necklace with the standard 18 inch chain instead of a 20 or 24 inch chain.

You're lucky, Pik - I'm a group counsellor in a city - so I know all too much about "speed balls" in that context LOL.

Another very inexpensive (very temporary) solution is to try "mole skin" - It's a thick pad with adhesive on one side - found among the first aid stuff in pharmacies. It can be cut to size - a small strip inside your ring will make it tighter until you loose all the weight you want and get it resized.

Thanks. There was another option they gave me with the speed bumps. Just a piece of metal that attaches to the ring. I have no idea what it's called but it help to size the ring. I didn't chose it before because it is visible and not as pretty.

I suppose I could get the bumps bigger, but I would have to keep doing it! I know I am going to keep losing. Right now I lose 1-2 lbs a day. I am sure it will slow down at some point.

Those speed bumps cost us almost a hundred bucks....

I tried the ring guards, both metal and clear plastic.. The plastic kept turning and also it would turn and slip off and it pissed me off and looked very cheep on my almost ten thousand dollar rings!!! The metal worked better for a short time but if you wear your rings all the time like I do ( to bed I mean) the metal get too warm and since it's very thin it will warp and push down and then you are in the same situation as before. I have been fighting with my jeweler because I bought a policy with my rings invade something happens to them they fix them for free or replace stones etc. it also includes free repairs and sizing. When the sized them down from a 7 1/2 to a 5 the kept the gold. If I needed them sized back up to an 8 let's say it wouldn't cost a penny... However to add the bumps or add extra gold to raise it higher because they can't size it smaller they want to charge me $100 !!! And I have a big problem with that!!!

Have you mentioned to them that they kept the gold from sizing your ring? I am almost afraid to do anything til before my wedding. I never wear it to bed and have only worn it a couple of times since my surgery because I haven't been very well.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
