Feeling like a failure

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on July 28th and am on the 2nd week of soft foods. Today was rough because I threw up twice. :( First in the morning I had a small sip of Water to take a pill and then I ate my Breakfast (scrambled eggs). Almost immediately I threw up. I won't make that mistake again. So I felt rough the rest of the day and still needed to get 200 more calories and 10g of Protein so I had some creamy PB and 3 low fat triscuit crackers. I couldn't get all PB down and chewed the crackers like 30xs. Then I felt terrible pain and discomfort and ended up throwing up a bunch of foam. Yuck!!!

I am a major rule follower and so I feel like I messed up bc I threw up. I have read some posts and it seems like I must have ate too much or too fast. I thought I did what I was supposed to do (measured and chewed) and still threw up. I know I'm learning about my new stomach but I was really hoping I'd be a "sleeve superstar" and do everything "right."

Would love some encouragement/advice from fellow sleevers. I don't want another day like this. :(

Hi there, I was sleeved on 7/23, and experienced a similar issue. I think we just need to take it slow, I know I Know now the PB and I no longer get along, and the first time I are scrambled eggs was not good, I made them the 2nd time with a 1/4 cup of skim milk, which made then very wet and it went down much better! These are all the trials of learning our new tummies!!

Fourteen months out and I still foam and heave more than most. One bite too many and it's over. Problem is, my "too many" might be after 1/4 cup or at 1 cup, I never know till it's too late. I'm happy for the tight restriction, but I still have a learning curve.

I am with u all. I am 1 month post op and I still throw up. I try to eat small amounts then I feel empty and gassy and I'm not getting in enough Protein. I eat a little bit more I throw up I cant figure it out some days I just drink cause that nasty slimy stuff is not cute. I guess as time go by we will all get to know our new stomach because I cant go thru life throwing up after every meal.

Hello. Though I am not yet at that phase (I am on full liquids). I think the posts previous to mine... are wise and good to know, as many have shared similar experiences.

One other thing that came to my mind is perhaps it may have been a combined issue that may have triggered vomiting... perhaps the pill that you took prior to eating was the other trigger... I know that for me, in general... with certain meds, I cannot take pills on an empty stomach... so I usually have a little bit of something to buffer my stomach.

Now that I am 6 days post-op, I have used a little bit of applesauce or yogurt to buffer my stomach from the particular meds I know would normally upset my stomach.

Hope that rough patch passes and you are feeling better.

I was sleeve three days after you and was put on full liquids for three weeks. Which seems longer than most. When in doubt and when having problems check with your surgeon. Perhaps your new stomach isn't ready for soft foods yet. Good luck! This isn't easy! Follow your surgeons plan. You are not a failure! You can do this! I believe in you!

Listen to your body.scrambled eggs are soft but not always agreeable to a new sleeve. Peanut Butter made me sick as a dog when I mixed it in a Protein Drink about 3 weeks out. I feel like you have tried eating a couple of difficult foods. My advice anytime something irritates your stomach to back up to gentler foods. If it were me, I'd be more worried about that then exactly meeting calorie goals for a particular day. Vomiting irritates the tummy too and makes it more prone for another vomit so back off and let it rest with very soft and mild foods that you know are agreeable. You are still very early post sleeve. Hang in there, it gets easier.

Hi guys. I know different surgeons have different plans but being on soft foods at two weeks seems WAY TOO SOON. My doctor David Kim has a torture plan that goes like this:

Clear Liquids 1-5 days post op

Full liquids (6-20) days post op ( this means shakes, strained fat free Soups, skim milk, diluted juices) soooo 2 weeks here

Puree stage (21-35) days post op ( everything you eat has to be very wet, mashed, mulched, and even then you need to chew it. They say applesauce consistency so things like refried Beans etc

Soft stage (36 -50 ) days post op - things like mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, very wet scrambled eggs etc.

Each stage is a two week marathon of a different texture of food. Your stomach is not ready at 7 days to start processing things like crackers. Smack your doctor.

He's performed over 6000 surgeries, he actually developed and trademarked the inverted staple line procedure for sleeve, and he hasn't had any leaks in any patients in the last 3000 since he went to the inverted line and this diet plan.

I was still on liquids at two weeks out. Didn't start things like eggs until 3 weeks and even then it was 1-2 teaspoons. (and no crackers till a couple months because they are just empty carbs). Even if your surgeon has approved these foods, it may be a little too soon for your tummy. Maybe slow down and go back to liquids for awhile. You are very early in the healing process and vomiting is hard on that fresh staple line. I transitioned through each food stage super slow, ate tiny amounts very slow and I've never vomited.

@ ...

Some advice from an older, wiser woman ...

Don't strive to be perfect. You aren't. You won't be. And if you think you're supposed to be, you will avoid learning anything new for fear of failing to be perfect the first time you attempt a new activity.

That's just not how we learn and expand our lives. Failing is part of growing and learning.

And with "phd" in your nickname, I know you love learning. :)

Thank you all so much!!! This was so encouraging and extremely helpful! I am definitely going to scale back to my liquid/super soft food stage. It did feel too fast, too soon for crackers and thicker foods. :)

This is a learning process and I appreciate the gentle reminder that we grow when we learn. I spent years not listening to my body and it got me up to 316 pounds. This amazing tool is teaching me something new....listen to what my new tummy is telling me. It's telling me to take it slow and BE PATIENT!!

Thank you all so much. Even though I've never met you, I know we all have this struggle in common.

I'm three weeks out and doing the pureed thing. But honestly I just want to eat cream of wheat...made with fat free milk... and apple sauce. My tummy loves them. I tried scrambled eggs yesterday, and while they stayed down, tummy did not enjoy them and I have no desire t o try them again. At least not in the near future. Interestingly enough, eggs were a staple for me before the sleeve. I simply enjoyed them. I wish cream of wheat and apple sauce were all Protein foods. I would be a happy camper.

eggs were too much in the first few weeks. Even now they can be too heavy. So I did egg whites in soft food stage. The whole liquid and soft food stages just suck. I tried to eat certain foods and had the slime and throw up. Nothing fancy but some foods seem like they will be soft and the sleeve says no. Keep it boring. Greek yogurt, Soups, refried Beans and ricotta cheese. It's so hard. I'm six or seven months now and yogurt, fruit and salads are my favorite.

but are you able to eat just about anything now? What's interesting is mentally I don't really want to add anything much besides the hot Cereal, homemade chicken Soup and my two shakes a day. I have a fear of throwing up and just don't want it to happen to me. Also, I can barely manage to eat the few ounces of cereal, soup, the two shakes and the 64 ounces of Water. I'm still trying to get my water in at 10pm. It's exhausting. I'm so thankful that I'm not having any cravings. Makes it easier for me to stick with what I'm doing mow.

Eating much softer foods today...pureed baby food and cottage cheese with a little soy milk to make it creamy. Much better! I found these fantastic organic baby foods called Plum Organics. They actually taste pretty good, have Protein and low carbs. I'm feeling better. :)

Cyber-abrazos (hugs) for all.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
