supplements and protein

Recommended Posts

I am feeling out some information on supplements and an average cost per month. Also, does insurance cover any of these, either private or Medicare

I am trying to decide on Protein as I would like to start trying some. Has anyone found some that taste decent ? liquid or powder better ?

No sleeved yet, finishing everything I need in October.

Thanks

Lainie

Are you referring to Vitamins, Calcium, minerals or Protein? I assume you mean Protein. I have found Premier Protein to be tasty and fairly cheap, about $1 per 30gram drink. You buy then by the case at costco or Sams. Even less expensive is dried whey protein which I get at Vitamin Shoppe. A large container (about 100s servings) cost $40. You can add it to almost anything (milk, yogurt) Mine is flavored and artificially sweetened, but it is available "plain". READ the labels carefully. Some are loaded withe sugar and fat.

Mr. surgeon, nutritionist and PCP want to see me off supplements as soon as possible, but I'm not there yet. Your team will have recommendations about Vitamins and other stuff.

I still drink at least 1protein drink a day. I like Premier Protein in the strawberry. I buy it direct from their website because costco doesn't carry it very often. I like Syntrax Nectar flavors the best. I mix it in light vanilla soy milk. My Vitamins come from The Vitamin Shoppe & are ones for bariatric patients. I also like Quest Protein Bars.< /p>

Hi there! I'm 9 months out and I have always used Premiere Protein ready to drink which I purchase at Sams or costco. chocolate is my favorite. I still have one every morning for Breakfast. As far as supplements, I take three Bariatric Advantage Ultra capsules every day and three Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate chewies. That's the brand my surgeon recommends, so that's what I take! I also take two Biotin per day. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.

I don't start Vitamins until later this week when I see my surgeon so I can't help with supplements but I can tell you my experience with Protein.

My surgeon and nutritionists said they'd always rather have me eat Protein than drink it so I've really tried to not need it. I bought some and I'm glad to have it in case I do NEED it, but I haven't needed to have any since my 3rd week post-op and I'm in my 5th week now.

I purchased the unflavored type found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7IODXQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have mixed it in Crystal Light and I've mixed it in food like cauliflower puree. I can't taste it and it adds protein when I need it.

My favorite Proteins....

- Premier chocolate, vanilla and strawberry but I have to dilute it 1/2 and 1/2 with milk because all RTD shakes are too thick and sweet for me.

- Muscle Milk banana cream, strawberry, Cookies and cream, and cake batter

- Syntrax Matrix Vanilla powder

- Syntrax nectar cherry, apple, lemonade and fuzzy naval

- Garden of Life Raw Fit original and Raw Protein chocolate and vanilla

- powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored for mixing in Soups, broths, casseroles, etc.

- Natures Valley Protein Bars...all flavors

- GNC Lean Bars...all flavors

- Fiber One Protein and Meal a Replacement bars

I am not a fan of Quest bars, Jay Robb or Isopure products, but that's a personal taste preference.

My supplements.....

Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Women's multi - daily

Garden of Life Vitamin Code Healthy Blood Iron (6 month labs showed high Iron level, so now I only take it 1-2 times/week

Natures Bounty Vitamin D3 gel cap - 3x/week

Twin Labs sublingual B12 - 3x/week

I used to take a Calcium supplement too, but my 6 months labs showed high calcium levels so I discontinued. Will recheck at 1 year.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
