How much weight loss per week is normal?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how much loss per week is normal after the RNY propcedure? I had the surgery 6 weeks ago and am afraid that I am not losing enough. I have only lost 22 pounds since I had the surgery.

Other people who had the surgery when I did have lost a lot more than I have. I feel discouraged and wonder how everyone else has been doing.

Thanks for any input!!

Everyone is totally different! I only lost 2 lbs per week for the longest time. I suffered from two stalls right away. It really just depends on your body. I know its hard, but try not to compare yourself to others, it will just drive you crazy! Good Luck on your journey!

A lot also depends upon how much you have to loose as well as if you're a revision.

There is no 'normal'. There are way too many variables.

I agree. Don't get too high of expectations. Before surgery I saw those 3-5 lbs a week stats and was so excited. I however am a slow loser as I don't have a lot to lose. 6 months post op I am down 50 lbs. But I am happy with that. Still losing super slowly now. But it is still coming off.

My mom was a lot heavier than I am. She lost at a faster rate. I am going on the side that I will be in the 2-4lbs per week range. Im okay with that :) While I am still very much overweight I am about 85lbs less than what my mom was day of surgery

I used this when I trained for the 10mile MN TC run and will be applying it to my weight loss rate.... fast or slow as long as you go. I dont care if the weight is fast or slow coming off me just as long as I am making daily efforts to change to more healthier habits. I can't wait to get back to running again!!

It's nice to find another runner lover on here! I'm back up to 3.1 miles right now. I'm not paying attention to speed as much as I am distance. It feels so nice to be able to run again!

I have lost 13 pounds this week. I would like to get into running, but I am not sure how to start. I know I can't go out there and just start running 5 miles a day. Give me some advice runners!

You can not compare your results to others...you have to compare yourself to yourself. Everyones' journey is different and everyones' goals are different. Some have a lot to lose and some dont and of course all of us hit stalls. So best advice is to keep going and follow your doc's advice and have goals for yourself. There is no exact number on how many pounds you should lose a week...you can do it. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the input. I lost 2 1/2 pounds this last week and was happy with that. The week before I only lost 2 pounds. I am trying really hard to stick to the diet but I am having trouble getting all my Protein in. I will just keep doing my best!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
