Sent home with open incision!

Recommended Posts

Ok I was sent home with a open incision on my left side. I have been packing it and cleaning for almost 3 wks now. It's turning purple and itching like hell! I know it's healing but driving my CRAZY! How long does this take to heal?

I've never have heard of going home with an open incision before so I can't answer that.

Has someone been watching it for you like a home nurse?

Do you have to go back to the surgeon for them to look at it?

I think you should call the surgeon and ask them what you should do.

Good luck and feel good.

Is it where the drain was removed? I had that. It was pretty small, like the size of a pencil eraser. Yes, I had to pack with gauze too, and it itched like crazy but it should start closing up for you pretty soon.

I was told that it's where the scope was. So they leave it half way open because it's the main mussel that your using to get up and lay down with. So they like it to heal like that instead of my busting stitches : / I looks great and I healing. But it's it itching and making me CrAzY!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
