Taste for food - will it come back?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am 5 weeks post sleeve today and am wondering will my taste for food come back? Also, when I eat Protein it sits like a log in my sleeve. I chew until mushy and I do wait the full 5 min between each bite. My taste has changed and smell has as well. I'd love to hear that this will pass

Yes, it will come back with a vengeance. Make plans for how you will deal with it, how you will exercise, and how you will overcome it and keep on the right path. Good luck and it is doable. Just read the success stories!

I am 8 months out, and my husband. I am hungrier than he is. He has lost 100 lbs but he is 6'2 and was 320. I am 5'4 and was ?220. My best advice for months has been eat before you leave home, eat before you shop. I took the 13 y/o grandson for a hamburger yesterday and I bought a small chicken nugget order. I came home and got on BP and realized I did this without thinking, because I was hungry. I have gained 7 lbs because of this stupidity. Plan better than I have. I am back on track LOL!

Linda. Girl. There is no way those nuggets were 24,500 calories (7*3500). Water retention. They were salty. Drink a lot of water, flush your system and the pounds will be gone. Next time get a grilled chicken sandwich, remove the bun and feel good about your choice.

I know this my LipstickLady friend, and yet...... I chose the cute little nuggets. But No more. I solemnly vow to never again go through a drive thru - even drove to Kansas from Florida and back, no weight gain. Gained 4 lbs. on a 7 day cruise, and lost it immediately. I am blessed to be old and retired. I got off track when my NUT said I was eating too much Protein, and I got gout in both big toe joints. I am going back to 1/2 filet mignon, fish, tuna, and more Protein and a little exercise as I can, and I should see a difference. Cowgirl Jane posted some good pointers last night that opened my eyes. Sometimes we think we are on point and then duh! Not! Thanks for the help, LipstickLady, we all need it. As you can see Wynnie, we are all helped here. Best of luck. Linda

At nine weeks, my taste for food hasn't come back. I walk by fast food places on my way to voluneer work, and the smell of greasy food makes me vaguely nauseous. Okay, more than vaguely. But then, I haven't been able to eat fast food since my gall bladder came out years ago...but sometimes the smell can drive you crazy.

My only real cravings pre-surgery (chocolate and salty snacks) both make me deathly ill now :/ And I do pack Snacks wherever I go for just-in-case. I don't trust myself to not make bad choices if the urge hits, so I try to cover the eventualities. Good luck :D

Enjoy the freedom of not wanting any of those things! Everyday I feel blessed that I don't want junky food. I feel blessed that I only want to eat small portions. That's the benefit of WLS having a break from all those things that made us gain the weight. Enjoy your break and learn to enjoy what you can have.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
