I had my surgery about 36 hours ago. The surgeon ok'd me for discharge tonight. While I feel like a million bucks compared to yesterday, right now the best I can say is that I'm hanging in there. But oh so glad to be home.

The bariatric team at Eason Hospital was great, thank goodness.

I felt like death for the first few days home. I felt great, even practically ran out of the hospital. Then the drugs wore off about two minutes into the car ride home. Rest assured by day 3 things will be more tolerable, and by day 5 it will be almost unnoticeable.

My one piece of advice for every new post-op is to make a bed wedge by creating a pyramid of pillows and covering it with a blanket to prop yourself up with for the first few days. Every night, remove one pillow so you're a little lower and you should be able to sleep on your back and roll over within a week. :)

The first week I felt like I had been hit by a truck. Missed the IV Dilaudid. The bottle of liquid Vicodin and I became fast friends that first 10 days.

I promise, it WILL get better. And when u start sliding smaller jeans on, ull forget about all the pain!

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
