Help With Taking Pills!!

Recommended Posts

The night of surgery the nurse tried to get me to take my medicine crushed with some water!! I stuck my finger down in that and tasted it!!!:faint: THOUGHT I WOULD THROW UP RIGHT THERE!!! SOOOO I didnt take it. Last night I crushed it up and put it in some broth...:omg: JUST AS BAD!!! I did it though...swearing to never do it that way again!! I called my RN and she said anything bigger than an M&M could get stuck. I had already checked with the pharmicist about a liquid but there is none and they said it would be fine to crush...BUT with out anything substantial to put it in IT IS TOO GROSS!!!!!!! Does anyone out there have ANY suggestions?? I am soooooo scared to get it stuck but I have to have this medicine...Deanna

I put my meds in sf ff pudding. My doc said it would be fine since your only using a spoonful or so. I tried Jello but that was the worst thing I could have done, it burned my throat for days. Good Luck

Hi! I have been watching for your threads because I am preop. Would you be allowed to cut them up in halfs and/or quarters - then take with Water? ?? Hope you are feeling better today but I understand because I am on six different meds per day.:) :)

Mine wont let me do anything but sf Jello, Water, sf popsiles and broth. I think I have a solution though. My pill has a line on it that I broke it in half, then I took a pill cutter and cut it in half again. If I start taking it at 8 pm I could have it down by ten if I took one piece every 15 minutes. That is what I have come up with tonight. It seems to be working quite well. Oh yeah, before the doc discharged me from the hospital he took me off my cholesterol med and my insulin resistance med. He said I wouldnt be needed them while i Was on a low carb the next two weeks. Hopefully I wont have to be back on them at all...When the cpap goes then I will know I have made progress!! Deanna

Okay... the night I came home from the hospital after surgery, I PBed on a quarter of a pill. It was a horrible experience! I was very shy about trying it again. Even with the amount of pain I was in. Soooo, I ended up sending my husband out to get the Tylenil Extra strength Rapid Blast Liquid. It worked great. It took the edge off, and it was easy to swollow.

I hope this helps. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Deanna,

I was in the same boat as you babe...I am on diabetic meds, and about 6 other meds. My doc said I didn't need to take my meds for the 1st month because I was on liquids for 2 weeks and then mushies for the 3rd week so now I'm in my 4th week and what I have been doing is putting them in my Protein drinks, apple sauce works good or s/f pudding. As for the CPAP, I am on that darn thing as well and was told by one of my drs that I probably won't get off of it til I hit 165lbs...but I have heard differently from people online that once they lost between 50-75lbs they were able to get rid of it. One thing I can say is my sugar has been great and my PCP told me to monitor my sugars and then decide whether to take meds or not - so far, I have been only taking 1 pill - half dosage. I hope yr monitoring yrself because you don't want yr sugar to be too low if yr not eating.

I'm here if you need help :help:

When the cpap goes then I will know I have made progress!! Deanna

I am GETTING my CPAP next week some time. My sleep test was what prompted me to go ahead and decide on the lap banding. I NOW have hypertension, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, pulmonary hypertension, and NOW OSA. :omg: I said enough is enough.

I too have a CPAP (since Aug 2006). The doctor who did my sleep test said that almost half of his patients are normal weight! So much for the theory that only fat people have sleep apnea. I'm 48 but don't know how long I've been snoring badly enough to be oxygen deprived. My lowest adult weight was 175 but that only last a few months. For the most part, I've never been below 200 since age 18 but the last two years I've gained 25 lbs and I'm thinking I need to do research, go to some seminars and talk to doctors about some sort of WLS. I have BMI of 42 and am 5'4". I'd like to get rid of the machine too and lose weight and see what it's like to have a normal, not food-obsessed life.

Years ago before I even thought of having lapband surgery, I too had sleep apnea. A doctor told me I because my tonsills were severly enlarged and needed to be rremoved, it would also be in my best interest for him to remove my uvula. Anyway, I had the operation. I wish I would have held off on that operation until the weight loss with my band. It was a horrible operation. Good luck to all you sleep apnea people and hang in there.

I'm having problems with it as well. Tried it in pudding, applesauce, milk, Water. Ewwwww. Finally I decided the lesser of all evils was the applesauce as long as I didn't mix it all together. I had to put a little applesauce on the spoon and cover it with more, put it in my mouth and swallow. Not ideal, but bearable...just barely.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
