Drain or no drain?

Recommended Posts

Am curious. I see a lot of posts thAt mention their drain tubes being removed, etc. I never had a drain tube that I am aware of. Is this just a choice of method for each dr.

I think it's just the surgeon's preference.

Nope no drain for me either. Two friends in Edmonton who had surgery around the same time, one had a drain the other did not...no idea why

It's the surgeons choice. I had a drain until I left the hospital (48 hrs). No biggy. They diaper pinned it to my gown and emptied it 2x each shift. Feels a little weird coming out but not really painful

Had my surgery last thurs and had a drain until I left (sat). It was not a big deal. It hurt a little bit when it was removed but it was manageable.

I had a drain for 8 days. It was a little weird having this tube coming out of my belly but not a big deal. Just had to empty it a few times a day and track the amount and the color of the liquid. But like others have said it didn't hurt coming out, just felt strange.

Ok interesting. I did not have a drain either . Why or what is the reason for the drain?

My surgeon said it gave him insight into how well I was healing. By day 6 or so the liquid was turning a yellowish pink (I know, TMI!) and he said that was a really good sign that all was well with my stomach closure.

No leak test after your surgery, like to the next day?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
