Sleeved on June 16th, having some issues

Recommended Posts

I have a killer headache (it's not caffeine withdrawal) and every tiny bit of liquid I get down makes me feel full and then I have sort of a semi-burp. Sort of like if a burp and a hiccup had a little baby ... that's what happens after every tiny sip. I think it may be air from my CPAP because I didn't have gas issues after surgery. I used some Gas-X strips, but so far it's still happening.

I can't go near my Protein drinks. I opened one up and I felt myself retch. I got down two sips yesterday and that was all I could do. Water with a tiny tiny bit of crystal light is the only thing going down. I'm going to try broth later today because I feel so weak and fatigued.

I spent the first night after surgery heaving up red blood, then a brownish liquid that had a bloody taste, then by morning it was only white foam. After that, I am not planning on doing the slightest thing that will make me throw up. I got an Rx to treat the nausea, but that doesn't help with the everything makes me want to hurl side of things.

Is this aversion to the smell of things like the Protein Drinks normal? How bad is it that I can't get them down?

I'm sorry you are feeling poorly. I haven't been sleeved yet but I know a lot of people on here can provide you with their experience. I hope you have called your doctor.

I hope you feel better soon. I have read about people eating ice chips. Please try it so you won't get dangerously dehydrated. Drink the Water w the Chrystal lite or whatever it takes. I think there is medicine for nausea. I really feel for you. I hope to have my surgery in MX, so I won't have a Dr. to call if I start out shakey. Your story is a little scary. Get well soon.

My Dr gave me an Rx for the nausea, and I had an extra day in the hospital because of that and other issues. I did have a rough time with the surgery.

I got some vegetarian broth down a little while ago but I'm still hiccaburping after every sip. My Dr suggested the CPAP might have something to do with it, so i figured maybe someone else here also had a CPAP and the same issue.

My Dr knows about these issues I am having but there isn't anything he can give me to treat my stomach turning at everything I smell.

I was told not to worry about Protein Drinks the first four days, just get down the liquids. I did popsicles. Maybe that would help. I also liked Isopure Grape Frost flavor after a couple of days. Keep sipping the Water or you will end up dehydrated. It will get better every day.

Everyone I know, myself included have burps. Gas is common. Keep walking even around in the inside of your house. The more walking you do the better it will feel.

What is CPAP

It's a machine connected to a mask that delivers Continuous Positive Airway Pressure to people who have sleep apnea.

I am 9 days post op and I am experiencing the exact same thing. I ended up going to the hospital for IV fluids yesterday. Don't let it go that far though because your veins are very hard to find when you are dehydrated. I was poked 6 times before they found one they could use. The spitting up blood though is worrisome. I was spitting up blood the first entire day after my sleeve and it ended up being a blood clot at the end of my esophagus due to my stomach twisting. I had to have another surgery right away because of it. Have they done a contrast X-ray test on you yet? If not I would definitely ask for one. It's the test where you drink a little bit of contrast and they watch it go down as you swallow it. That's how they found out about my issue. I still have ok days and bad days. Today was an ok day because I was able to get half my Protein in and maybe a third of my fluids in. The only thing that stays in without coming back up all bubbly and gross is chicken broth blended with tasteless whey protein from GNC. I sip about 4 or 5 spoons of this every 10 or so minutes until I finish it. I have noticed that warm liquids don't cause as much spitting up if any. Popsicles cause the most for me. I can't wait till week 4!! Most of the posts I read say it gets 100 times better for us then.

I had an upper GI before I left the hospital and everything was working fine, thank God.

My Dr gave me prescriptions for acid reflux and nausea meds that helped me a lot, so no more throwing up.

Yesterday I was able to get down 1/2 of an Isopure without issues when a couple of days before, the smell from just opening the bottle made me want to throw up. I keep sipping sipping sipping liquids all day long so I don't get really dehydrated. Warm liquids were the first thing that went down for me too, and they still feel the best. I know I'm not getting the full amount of liquids, but every day I get in more than the day before.

I hear you about the popsicles, Just opening the freezer door and seeing the boxes gives me flashbacks, lol.

I hope you continue to improve.

I do not use a Capp, but first 4 dYs I had a lot of hiccups. Never lasted long. They are getting more infrequent every day.

I'm so sorry to hear you are going through some rough times Kat619. It does get better. I couldn't do anything cold at first because I also had a hiatal hernia repair, but now they are my best friend! Love to chomp on them!I found broth to be soothing to the stomach also. Now that I am 4 weeks out, things are much better and I know it will get better for you too. Just hang in there.

I did find at the beginning that sipping as much as I could was helpful in healing and getting my liquids in. I love Cyrstal Light Lemonade, ice, and 1/2 cup of Water mixed with strawberry Sorbet Unjury Protein Powder. Very delicious and quenches my thirst. Plus 21 gr. of protein! I also love ice, 1/2 cup of milk, and 1 scoop of Unjury chocolate Splendor. I mix it in my magic bullet and it comes out like a Wendy's Frosty. I eat it with a spoon! Works great when I am with the family and they are having ice cream.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
