Recommended Posts

So...like the topic reads....4 weeks out, watermelon ok? Of course I plan on chewing it well. Thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks for asking this question. I was wondering the same thing. I'm 5 weeks post op & see my surgeon next week. Hopefully I can then eat solid foods. I'm really wanting watermelon. I hope someone answers this question.

I learnt if you chew it well and your stomach can handle it then it's fine :-) ... Just remember it might fill you up and you need protien more than watermelon

It would not have been okay or anywhere close to okay for me, under my surgeon's plan, at four weeks out. I was just starting pureed food and not allowed ANYTHING that isn't high in Protein, and certainly no fruit. But what does your surgeon's plan call for?

right, no fruit..most have.high sugar and carbs...you'd be best talking with your NUT about that... I think it's too soon for it... you can get watermelon sugar free flavoring for your Water etc from Toscani, if you want the flavor :)

1/2 c watermelon is 6g carbs/sugar and 23 calories. Much less sugar than a banana or orange or apple (from 30-40g each) many others. Berries have the least.

Depends on your surgeon's plan. By four weeks out I was on most real food (definitely some exceptions like lettuce, beef, and more) but watermelon would have been fine if I had eaten my Protein and still had room (but for me that was highly unlikely!)

Ask your Dr.

Now at more than six months out I eat it a couple of times a week...just a few bites. Less than 1/4 cup and it fits into my plan quite nicely!

Kool Aid makes a sugar free Water flavour of Watermelon. Its yummy.

Here is a website that will help with knowing how much sugar is in certain fruits, It may be to much sugar for your stomach this soon. Everyone is different though.

That is a HUGE serving though! A half cup is much more likely/reasonable and it's only 7g sugar. When you compare ounce of ounce watermelon is one of the lowest in sugar because of it's high Water content.

No way I'd advocate Kool aid with artificial flavors and colors over real fruit. Watermelon is full of natural sugars that made no one fat.

The sleeve will digest it fast regardless. Get your Proteins in but don't forego fruit in its natural form. Your bowels will thank you.

I tried watermelon at about 4 or 5 weeks out and my tummy was not happy! Listen to your doctor AND your body, it will tell you if it's not ready!

Good point! Everyone's body tolerates different things differently. I couldn't eat eggs for months but could do lettuce at six weeks.

I'm almost to 5 weeks, and my NUT approved me for the soft food stage, which includes soft fruits. She made a special point that I could have melon, but said only a small cube or two because of the sugar (but that's the same she said about all fruits. Just have a small amount)

Your NUT's advice may vary. I was just happy to be able to add some fresh fruits in since the farmer's markets are coming into full swing and I didn't want to miss some of my favorite fruits and veggies :D

I was really just curious if my stomach could take it. I just happened to be cutting some up and wondered about it. I am introducing new soft foods now. I wanted to have a cube just because I love it and its so juicy! I feel like I am thirsty frequently. I havent tried it yet, and I certainly wouldnt be eating cupfuls, lol. I am always so amazed how I ate like an animal right before surgery and now even though I am eating so much less I have to be so concerned about sugar. So crazy how it all changes.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
