I have read so many posts about people getting the sleeve and many having to do a revision to bypass because of GERD. From what I understand and what my surgeon said (I had originally though about getting the sleeve but he quickly recommended a bypass because of my GERD) if you have GERD before surgery it may not take it away after getting the Sleeve, and it could even be worse after. I just talked to a friend of mine who is wanting a Sleeve and also has GERD but didn't know that.

I know there are probably some who had GERD before their Sleeve and now don't but I wonder what the percentage is of those who got the Sleeve with GERD and still had it after, if not worse, and also had to get a revision because of it. And especially why Doctors aren't advising their patients of this.
(I'm xposting this in the Sleeve forum as well to get input)

If you had GERD before surgery/or pre op did your Dr let you know of this? Did it change your decision?

I have GERD and my doctor bluntly told me no to the sleeve. They said my heartburn would get extremely bad if I got the sleeve. I was upset for a minute about not being able to get the sleeve, but I need to lose weight so I decided to go with the RNY instead.

Same here jtickle. I just wanted people to be aware of this in case their Dr didn't tell them. :)

I originally was going to have the sleeve but my gastric doctor told me to have bypass or I would be miserable with problems.

The surgeon told me this but until my gastric doctor said something I ignored the warning.

In my opinion if you have Gerds don't do the sleeve or lapband.

I'm pleased with my bypass.

My doctor said no to the sleeve because of GERD. He explained to me that the sleeve is bad for GERD because acid is formed primarily in the lower stomach. Because the bypass cuts off the lower stomach you won't get as much acid.

I was just told today (EGD was Tuesday and Pre-Op was yesterday) that my surgeon will not do the sleeve and doesn't recommend the band due to GERD and Barrett's. So now it's the RNY for me.

My husband had the sleeve and had the gerd after ...I had severe gerd before and had gastric bypass and no more gerd... So glad I made the decision.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
