Gulping water when your really thirsty?

Recommended Posts

well I am 3 days post op sleeve and have been dying to gulp Water but know I can't. I have read all of your comments and seems like I have a 50/50 chance of being able to do it again one day. I will take those odds. It's better than 0! Oh the things I took for granted pre sleeve!

My doc said no straws for drinking. I don't know if that's forever or while healing. Said it brings in excess air.

I'm almost 6 months out and sometimes it hurts gulping but you learn how to "adjust"..love my water! Sometimes I add crystal light flavors or diet snapple flavors to mix it up. Delish!

3 months out and I drink fluids normally. Several swallows at a time :)

No more drinking w/straws ever ,you get gassy & can stretch the sleeve out from extra air ingested.

I was actually told that too, the extra air part at least. I found my self accidentally sipping from a straw one day tho and was amazed how much easier I could drink. I don't get gassy from it...and I figure even if I did a little gas is better than dehydration.

I am not able to gulp down Water - it causes major pain for me.

When I work out, I make sure I stay hydrated before my work out and fill up a 17 ounce bottle for the work out...I usually finish about 1/2 to 2/3 during a 60 minute workout.

I can gulp and I can drink from a straw without too much gas but I found myself wondering whether I'd stretch my sleeve due to this. Then I remembered the barium test after the surgery where I could see the speed of liquid flowing through the sleeve andI think it's normal that I can gulp. My surgeon made a pretty tight sleeve, so I get full pretty early but have hardly any restrictions on liquids.

I am experimenting with how much Water my sleeve can handle. I swallowed about 4 oz in 5 minutes today and was extremely happy. Get liquids down is a task pain. If I could drink larger quantities I could hit all of my goals.

But I am concerned I might be stretching my gut. I wish there was a way to see how quickly the liquid moves from sleeve to intestines.

I read that water goes through fast because it's liquid and no you won't stretch your tummy out by gulping and yes your sleeve is working and still small. Experts say that your sleeve will stretch a bit but only after 8 months to a year which is normal.

I am 13 days out today and last night I was able to drink 4 oz in one min! No pain or pressure. I was getting so depressed because I was so thirsty but could never catch up. I think it will be better now that I know I can drink more than 1/2 an oz at a time. I assume it would hurt or I would get reflux if I over do it? Does anyone know for sure? I'm sure it's going through faster and this is why I can get it down easier.

I accidently drank from a straw out to dinner once, completely forgot that I shouldn't and nothing happened. I was drinking Water fast and really enjoyed it. I haven't returned to drinking from a straw but I would love to.

I'm 2 months out and glad to tell you I'm a happy gulper. I can't gulp as long as I could prior to surgery but I can certainly quench my thirst. I drink through a straw most of the time. My surgeon has no issue with the straw. WOOT!

I respectfully disagree. Many doctors allow straws, mine included.

Air won't stretch your sleeve. If that was the case, you wouldn't be allowed to eat broccoli, Beans and other foods that create gas.

I use a straw all the time. I still can't eat more than 2-4 ounces, and I'm a year out.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
