need advice for getting fluids down

Recommended Posts

sleeved Monday. Having hard time getting fluids down. Any advice? Feels like it's stuck and not flowing down to my stomach.

small sips...and you may want to try warm/room temp fluids for right now...sometimes the cold stuff will bother you...

if that doesn't work, call your doctor for suggestions... I found a cup of Decaf tea very soothing...or broth :)

Good luck, you will get thru this!

I had trouble with Water too, which was really upsetting because I was used to drinking 2 L a day before surgery. Post op, it actually hurt to drink it. It was easier to drink milk or juice. Take it one day at a time, start with small sips, room temperature, always carry a bottle with you so you remember to keep drinking. It started getting easier after 2 weeks. I can now drink a little more than 1 L a day and can actually take big sips, only 2 at a time though, but it's still better. Hang in there, it gets easier.

For the first few months I could not force down plain Water. I mixed apple juice about 60/40 with Water and it went down very easily. Yes, there are calories and carbs in apple juice but dehydration is no joke and considering how few calories I was eating I felt it was worth it.

I agree with BigGirlPanties. Try different liquids, too. Gatorade, tea, soy/almond milk ... different temps ...

I had the same issue. It helped if i made sure to walk around throughout the day. It seemed like things wouldn't get as "stuck" that way. You should definitely try some crystal light flavors if you have a problem with plain Water. Hope everything gets easier for you soon!

I had the same issues until I got rid of the gas from surgery. I walked a lot and took gas relief meds. It helped me to stand up while sipping, too. I'm only 8 days post op and I PROMISE it gets better. I did best with warm tea and Water mixed with a few ounces of Vitamin Water Zero (lemonade flavor is my favorite).

Hang in there!!!

You're still swollen. It will get easier! For the first several days I could only take the smallest sips, but as swelling went down, I could take larger drinks within a week, and soon I could take normal drinks. Hang in there and keep sipping!

Warm herbal tea was my best method of getting Water in. Still is, some days. Take tiny sips and keep your fluids with you at all times. It gets easier to drink as every day passes, so don't worry, it won't always be like this!

I agree with what everyone has said in the above posts. I am 3 months out and I still have problems with plain Water. It all tastes metallic to me. I have to use crystal lite lemon aid or sugar free kool aid drops. The Kool Aid drops in cherry have been the best as far as I'm concerned. It makes the water so smooth and it goes down so easy. You can adjust the flavor with the drops. Just one or two for a little flavor or more if you like a strong kool aid taste. Different things work for different people and you have to experiment to see what is best for you. Good luck.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
