The Sleeve or RNY......that is the question....

Recommended Posts

Heya all,

I'm glad I found this site! My clinic just called me and set a surgery date for the 29th of May. I'm excited/nervous and a bit of head spinning, it literally was 45 days from my first doc appointment to surgery. I tell you though, I'm excited for no more freakin testing....OMG I don’t know if I can handle any more poking, prodding, x-raying, ultrasounding and blood taking.

The next question they asked was "I see we haven't decided what procedure, the surgeon is saying you are a good candidate for either. Which one do you want?"

The surgeon is leaning toward the sleeve, due to the fact I use NASIDs for joint pain from sports injuries. I've read a ton, looked at sites, and read forums...and still am undecided.

The bennies vs negatives on each are clear...I'm just still undecided.

Anyone else in this dilemma?

Thanks

-Jay

I vote sleeve. If you have gerd or reflux maybe bypass is more for you.

I started out my 6 month pre-op program thinking RNY for sure. About half way through my requirements I started to have serious reservations. What I realized was that it wasn't surgery itself that was giving me pause, but specifically the malabsorptive part of the procedure and re-routing of the intestines, etc. I realized that I could get all the benefits of the surgery without doing all of that by choosing the sleeve. So I changed my procedure to the sleeve about half way through and never doubted it after that point. In the back of my mind I was afraid i maybe wouldn't lose as much with the sleeve, but as you can see from my ticker, I've lost almost 120 pounds in under 8 months, so I am a strong believer in the sleeve. For me it was a tool to give me a jump start and what I did with it after that was up to me. :-) Good luck in making your decision.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
