United healthcare CA-does it take long to get approved?

I have united through my employer, however were switching to blue anthem July 1st. Should I start my process now and hope to have it completed before then OR wait for the new insurance to kick in? Opinions on both providers please and how they handle weight loss surgeries. Thanks in advance!!
