Recommended Posts

Haven't had the urge to have a bowl movement since Monday. .had surgery Tue morning. Should I take something. I was thinking maybe I have nothing in my bowl since I've been on liquids only. Feel bloated, I keep thinking it the painful gas..have been taking gas X since Tuesday day of surgery.

I had surgery Monday. It wasn't until Wednesday I passed gas and Thursday when I had a bm. Have u added benefiber into your daily routine? It works... don't worry just keep walking to get the gas moving. Give ur body time to adjust.

I am the complete opposite, I have too many bowel movements and have had marathon trips to the bathroom! I have had diarrhoea since surgery. No pains just quick abrupt runs to get there in time. The upside is I believe this will help me with losing.

My surgeon gave me a cocktail, I know it has Malox in it, along with a bunch of other things. You also have to remember you're on a clear liquid diet, so maybe that could have something to do with it. I wouldn't worry. You really don't have to have a bowel movement every day. I had a neighbor once that used to go over a wekk before she could go, and doctors told her that's quite natural for some people. Funny enough, my own daughter has now become one of those people, It will happen when It's ready, haha.. Good luck on your journey, both of them, lol.

i'm having surgery on May 6, and this reminds me of a question on my list for my Dr next week. I was wondering since for the 2 week preop diet i will be taking in so little food and Fiber, and then anestesia and pain meds can also slow down digestive track, and then not eating fiber for quite a while post op, what about cleaning your system out a couple days preop with miralex, laxatives, or mg citrate type of thing. Anyone's doctor suggest something like that? What about benefiber during 2 week preop?

Citrucel worked for me pre-op so I'm trying it again. Embarrassingly I hadn't had any BMs since surgery until last night. No diarrhea since 4 days post.

Where does it go if it's not coming out? I've also been bloated. These could explain my 2-week stall. I hope they can!

Please, especially if your're taking pain meds... take a lot of Fiber and once you start eating, take laxatives if you're not having a bowel movement at least every couple days. I ended up with a bowel obstruction 2 weeks post op and it was absolute hell! I had to go to the ER.

I take glycerin suppositories when I feel like u need to go instant because milk of mag just made me only past gas. But maybe a lax here or there can help as well just I will still consult with doc first cuz remember we are still healing so u should want something that will be compatible to ur stomach

There are several reasons for not having a bowel movement after surgery, the primary reason is that you are not taking solids in.. No solids in, minimal or no solids out. If you are on liquids, then your primary source of elimination will also be liquid.

A poster asked about clearing your system prior to surgery.. This should be determined by your doctor. Mine did the Calcium citrate the night before surgery so I didn't expect to have another until several days after surgery at the earliest and I was right. I didn't have a bowel movement for 5 days after surgery.

Their is a tea called "smooth move" that works wonderfully if you believe you are constipated early on after surgery. If you are early out from surgery, be careful with Fiber laxatives as your digestive tract is still very sensitive to fiber. Discuss with your doctor just to make sure it's ok. Be sure you are getting all your Water in as this will help also.

I had surgery on Monday the 14th. My surgeon had me drink 10 oz of magnesium citrate the afternoon before to clear myself out. I pass gas just fine but have not have a bowel movement. I do not have any discomfort in my lower stomach so I just think that because of the liquid only diet that there's just really not anything to release right now.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
