Newbie with questions

Recommended Posts

Hello! I've been lurking here for a few weeks, enjoying reading everyone's stories and finding LOTS of great information. I just got my pre-op diet and will be scheduling surgery for sometime the end of this month or the beginning of May. I do have some questions regarding Protein shakes/powders......here's a list of those that I'm supposed to choose from and I'm wondering which is the most palatable. lol! I'm really sensitive to that mineral-ly taste that alot of supplements have but I know I've got to get these shakes down. Any recommendations or comments? I would sincerely appreciate it :)

Isopure

Protein Shots

Labrada Lean Body

Muscle Milk Lite

Pure Protein

EAS Advantage Edge

Myoplex Regular and Lite

BSN Syntha-6 Isolate

Nature's Best Zero Carb

whey Protein

Thanks again for any informationi/feedback. I look forward to sharing my journey with everyone.

You're gonna get loves and hates on every one of these! :)

My NUT gave me sample packs to try. You can also order samples off websites so that you get to try before you buy the big bucket. I'm pre-op and doing the samples to see what I like or dislike so that when I need them, I won't have to be testing them out then.

Good luck!

Thank you, Ginger Snaps! I didn't think of trying to get samples......I'll give that a shot. Best of luck to you as you begin your journey!

I had my sleeve Monday I stocked up on Unjury products. So far the only Protein I get down is the unjury chic Soup . I really like my lemon squeezed Vitamin Water . When u pack your bag throw a couple in there .

How long does your doc require you to be on liquids?

I went out and bought a bunch of shakes, powders and Soups and never used most of it. My pre-op diet was 4 days liquids and then Soups 4 more days and then mushies. I wasn't all that hungry the first week so I only drank a half dozen shakes. Don't waste a lot of money on large quantities of one product but try a few to see what you like?

Hi Elizalee, congratulations on your surgery date! Very exciting.

samples are a great idea. I know you can buy single packets of Protein powders at the health food store. There are lots and lots of different whey Protein protein powders available. Personally I cannot tolerate artificial sweeteners so I always look for ones without aspartame (sucralose).

Best wishes!

Thank you to everyone who responded. I called my Nutritionist to see if they have samples available. If not, guess I'll be hitting the Vitamin stores to see what I can find. My surgeon requires 2 weeks of Protein shakes 2x daily plus one small high Protein meal (chicken, vegies and fruit). I can tell already that I'll relish every bite of the meal. lol!

Here's to living in Lapbandia :)

That was my same pre-op diet. I really enjoyed the dinners. He gave me a list of frozen meals also that I could eat for dinner. Good luck with everything!

It's not on your list, but I drank and still drink Premier Protein shakes. They are comparable to all the supplements on your list though with 30 grams of Protein per shake, 3g fat, 1g of sugar, and 160 calories. They are sold at many stores like Walmart, Meijer, costco, and Sam's Club. They only come in the basic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry and are pre-mixed but they are my favorite so far. Even at 7 weeks post-op I still like them, which is saying something haha.

Best of luck to you :)

I haven't started the pre op diet yet, but I have tried Garden Of Life raw Protein and Meal Replacement shakes. They have chocolate, vanilla, unflavored, and a spiced vanilla chai flavor. Also some other good products like detoxing superfood mixes and whatnot. They're much healthier than most shake/drink mixes on the market.

This isnt on your list, but I loved the Ensure drinks , found in grocery stores in the diabetic section. ( Cheapest at Walmart, about $6.50 for a 6 pack). Usually only have choc, strawberry, vanilla and french vanilla, I loved them.

Unjury chocolate Splendor Protein Powder, online. And Atkins Dark Chocolate shake, at CVS. I keep those in my desk at work.

The EAS and Premier are both good. I still use them some just to make sure I get my Protein in and for a quick Breakfast at times.

Thanks to everyone for all the great replies! We had some unexpected expenses that will delay my surgery for about a month (it's always something....lol!) so it gives me time to round up my samples and start trying them out. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
