Stressing a little about my upcoming surgery

Recommended Posts

G'day all

I've been reading this forum for a couple of weeks after stumbling across it, it's a wealth of information which is great, but after reading some users comments and feelings of regret it's starting to make me second guess my decision.

I go in for surgery on the 16 of April, so it's 8 days away at the time of this post. I've been managing quite well on the pre-op diet, having my 3 shakes a day with a snack on a carrot or something in between. My nutritionist gave me a list of approved foods which included diet cordial and jelly, so i have that occasionally too. It helps mix things up a bit.

I'm definitely worried about post-op though. I'm a big tall lad and until now I've enjoyed big meals, with plenty of meat, or potatoes etc and it sounds like that's all about to change. While I know I need to lose weight for my health, I'm starting to wonder if I'm making a big mistake.

Has anyone regretted their decision to get surgery, I can understand feelings of regret after a few days or even weeks, but say to those who are several months on, are you still regretting it?

I was unaware of some of the other difficulties post-op too, hair loss, not being able to sleep right (some people are saying weeks later they still can't sleep in their bed?), people who are still hungry when the surgery should have taken that feeling away. I'm assuming I'm just nervous and looking at only the negatives, but if anyone is able to offer some friendly words of advice to help me out, I would be in your debt

Cheers

Good morning from Florida. My husband is a big tall man also, and we were both sleeved. He definitely is a steak and potato kind of man, and today we share a small filet mignon and a few green Beans and feel completely satisfied. We are 67, and health problems caused us to get the sleeve after 10 years of research and seminars. Today, our life does not revolve around food thank God. We have healthy items in the fridge, and we only eat when we are hungry. We eat to live, we do not live to eat anymore. We are over 4 months post op, and we have both lost about 60 lbs. We are off several medications. My husband has been diabetic for about 30 years, I believe the cause to be his lifetime of obesity. We do not regret our decision one bit and are hoping to add a few years to our life. Ten years ago if we could have had the sleeve, it would have made a lot of difference for us. The reason not to wait for the surgery if you are overweight, is that these weight-related illnesses including HBP, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. will catch up with you. Best of luck to you!

Hey there! I am nine months out and have absolutely no regrets. There are no guarantees that this surgery will be easy for you -- but it does get relatively easy for lots of people after the first few weeks. Keep in mind that people tend to post here when they are having problems or concerns -- they aren't going to post just because things are great (usually anyway). So you get a skewed perspective of what sleeved life is like for most people.

For me, I was back to sleeping like normal within about a week. I was off painkillers during the day after four days, and off them at night within a week. I had no trouble getting down all my liquids and Protein starting the day after surgery.

Yes, your way of eating and your relationship with food is going to have to change. You are going to have to work at that. But it is worth it! You can find other ways of enjoying life. Being healthy and fit will open up a lot of new opportunities for you, if you are like most of us.

Good luck to you!

Thank you both for your responses, it's great to hear some very positive outcomes. My nerves have settled again today, I think I was just getting a little anxious.

Fingers crossed I can keep the nerves at bay for a while!

Yower85, I had the same feelings. I go into be sleeved in 5 1/2 hours and still have some doubts. I wouldn't really even call them doubts , its just nerves. I just try and tell myself that I made this decision with a clear head and after all the research I did , this is the one I decided. Try to stay focused and remember why u decided to do this

Good advice and wishing u success on ur WLS journey. I will be sleeved Monday and my emotions and jitters r right there where urs r. I just told my hubby last evening now I'm second guessing myself but up until yesterday I was 200% sure I made the right decision with a clear head and after tons of research. With that said I'm putting my trust in God and moving ahead full steam believing me and my daughter will come through this like champs.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
