I've heard different things. The lady who led my support group said it puts pressure on your staple line but long term it wouldn't matter. I've also heard it's because you don't realize how fast you drink with a straw. And then you know a lot of people say never again. I mostly stopped using a straw long before surgery and I'm going to try to stick with that. I did take a tiny sip of my husbands iced coffee the other day, but I didn't swallow it immediately and it was fine but not something I plan on doing frequently.

My doctor's office said we'll be able to use a straw after 6 months. Can not use one right after surgery bcus we would swallow air which could make our pouches too full to fit in what we really need.

I was told no straws. The only way I could drink my protein shake was with a straw so I've always used it for that. I only had a problem once with drinking too fast. It was a painful lesson that I learned quickly! I never did it again...
