caffeine withdrawal headaches

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 3 of pre op diet and have a horrible lingering headache. Does anyone know any tricks for caffeine withdrawal??

I had a bad headache 1st five days of preop and I had switched to Decaf 2 months earlier, so it may or may not be the caffeine. As for caffeine, I started drinking 1/2 caf for a couple weeks, then did 1/2 caf one day, decaf the next, and gradually went all decaf.

I didn't have to give up coffee and in fact made sure I had a least six cups of my favorite brew, the day before surgery.

You might find going cold turkey for a couple of days your best option.

This has surprisingly been the most difficult part of pre-op prep. I'm getting off slowly, but it still makes me exhausted and foggy, which is so bad for my work.

I wonder why some patients don't have to get off caffeine and some do.

My paperwork says it is to avoid dehydration and post-op headaches.

Hmmmmmmmmm...this is challenging!

I gotta say, there is no easy way to withdraw from caffeine. Just drink lots of Water and suffer for a bit. Tylenol if you must. Withdrawal from food is hard enough. You don't wanna go through it all at once. AND don't drink 8 cups the day before surgery or any day if you can help it. Respect the bean!

Well I've drunk two pots for around 30yrs a day, with no side effects. I didn't even have a headache after surgery or at all this week. It really is down to the individual :)

Apple juice actually contains more caffeine than coffee and so do most soda's, I'd be more worried about those drinks than a natural product.

I've only had a couple off coffee's made with milk since surgery and a few cups of tea (tea also has as much caffeine as coffee).

But I'm just one individual and may not be the norm!! :)

Maybe try apple juice just once a day and see if that helps, Good Luck

Actually, apples do not contain any any caffeine. They do, however, contain 13g of sugar and the rush you get from that can be misconceived as a caffeine boost. That's where the myth comes from.

I've drank Decaf tea everyday since surgery. I was a 2 cups/day coffee drinker before surgery, but I weaned down to decaf preop. Unfortunately the acid from the coffee has made me nauseous every time I've tried to drink it postop.

"Respect the bean" Hilarious but so true; thank you!

I am Italian, coffee has always been a part of my life. It always sounds good to me. It would be very strange for me to be turned off by it after surgery.

Ok, so if I successfully switch to decaf-how soon after surgery can I have a cup of Decaf (black)? I saw that my doctor will send me to the airport with broth and black tea...so why not decaf coffee?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
