Comparison: Alexian Brothers / Kane Center and University of Illinois Chicago

Recommended Posts

Keep in mind this is based on my personal experiences so far. If yours were different or you have more to add, please chime in! No particular order:

1a. UIC's info session was short and to-the-point, highlighting the essentials.

1b. The Kane Center seminar was thorough and over two hours long. For someone who has already done a lot of research and spent time in the forums here it would be almost 100% redundant. But I did like that they brought in four post-op patients for unscripted testimonies/Q&A. The surgeon also showed footage of the actual procedures being done (bypass, band, and sleeve).

2a. UIC offers patients a lot of options with respect to the pre-op diet and Vitamins. During the pre-op diet, as long as I'm not getting too many carbs, any Meal Replacement Protein shake is fine. My Vitamins can be cheap prenatals combined with any brand of deficiency-specific supplements. They will use regular follow-up labs to determine if a patient needs more or less of certain vitamins.

2b. The Kane Center has a 'partnership' with Bariatric Advantage and wants everyone to buy (expensive) B.A. shake powder and vitamins through them.

3a. UIC does not offer bariatric support groups. The psychologist might recommend OA or group therapy, but that's it.

3b. The Kane Center holds and strongly encourages patients to participate in local bariatric support groups.

4a. UIC accepts Medicaid. It is located in an urban area and attracts a lot of diverse patients.

4b. The Kane Center does not accept Medicaid. It is located in the suburbs, and the info session was attended by, well, suburban people-- some diversity, but much less than in Chicago.

5a. The UIC surgery office is often crowded, chaotic, and disorganized. Some appointments must be scheduled well in advance.

5b. No significant basis for comparison yet, though the coordinators were above average in making me feel welcome, comfortable, and directed. It was easy to get an initial appointment for the week after my inquiry.

6a. The UIC medical staff are down-to-earth, efficient professionals who always provide customized care.

6b. No basis for comparison yet.

Here's my biased opinion for what it's worth.

I was referred to the Kane Center by my PCP, she and the practice she works at only recommend this center because they are a Center of Excellence in Bariatrics. My first experience with them was the seminar that like you I found extremely informative. When I went to my first appt with the surgeon (Dr Paul Guske) I was met by a nurse who treated me with the utmost respect and explained everything she was doing. Upon meeting Dr Guske and talking with him honestly, I was hooked. He is very compassionate and I never felt like I was the "fat" person in the room. He was/is very respectful and so encouraging. We talked for a bit about the different procedures, my health issues and then he asked me which procedure I thought was best for me. He was glad I had already chosen RNY, but he said if I had picked another he would have respected my decision. Thru the whole pre-op process I never felt like I was on my own. Every and any question I had was answered quickly and kindly, no matter how small or large, real or imagined in my head. During my final pre-op appt with Dr. Guske, he was very reassuring and I felt completely comfortable with what was about to take place. And then there's Alexian in Hoffman Estates. I've been in many and actually worked at a hospital but I have NEVER seen so many caring people who know what their doing. The nursing staff on 2 South that takes care of bariatric surgical patients are the BEST. They know what you need, how you feel and how to help you more often then not without you even having to ask. There wasn't a single disrespectful person there. I never felt like I was being judged or condemned because of my weight or situation. So if I ever had to refer someone, it would be to the Kane Center, Dr. Paul Guske and Alexian in Hoffman Estates. They are all top notch in patient care, compassion and understanding. Again, it's my unbiased opinion, but I feel quite confident in referring them to anyone. Best of luck with your journey

Quick add - I don't have to buy their shakes or Vitamins. They supplied me with a list of Vitamins you can get at Walgreens and they really only worry about your Protein intake, but it doesn't "have" to be Bariatric Advantage, although as you state, they are in partnership with them so they offer that product in office.

That's relieving! The info folder just has so many pages on Bariatric Advantage, such as an order form and another page stating in big letters, "Once your surgery is scheduled a fee of $147.48 will be requested for the Meal Replacement Diet."

I do like that nuts and fruit are allowed pre-operatively.

Not so excited about the colon cleanse; just did that for a colonscopy last month and it was hell. From what I've read, most bariatric patients just go on Clear liquids for a day or two before surgery. People, correct me if I'm wrong!

It's good to hear the staff truly care, both at the center and the hospital.

Thanks so much!

I to had Dr. Guske and St. Alexian for the hospital and agree 100 per cent with everything "sugarfreeme" had to say. Had my sleeve done on 3/18 and do my followup appointments this Tuesday. No complications and always treated wih the utmost respect by everyone at the hospital and the Kane Center. Dr. Kane was actually the one who came to check me out of the hospital and see how I was doing. They truelly work as a team with the patient being their true priority. Only place I went to so nothing else to compare it to but have no complaints.

I had my lap-band at UIC. I had a good experience, but Dr. Horgan is no longer there. Who is the current surgeon?

OMG Cathy - I had my RNY on the 18th (7:30am) and also have my follow-up on Tuesday (2:00). Did you not just love the nurses at the hospital? They were all so nice and caring. I also loved that everyone gets a private rooms. No sharing space, having to share a tv or listen to someone snore, although I did hear someone hacking all night long the first night. Fixed that the second night with earplugs and a closed door. Talk about a small world. Dr Guske is the best, so kind and compassionate. I'm so glad my PCP recommend them to me. Like I said, I would have no problem recommending them to anyone.

AlmostHome, check on alternates to the Bariatric Advantage when you see them. I didn't question them on that, but Dr Guske did talk to me about Vitamins from GNC so I'm sure they'll give you a list of alternates to the shakes.

@@SugarFreeMe how long did it take for them to schedule your surgery after everything was approved? I was cleared by the pulmonologist last Tuesday and I'm still waiting for them to call. It is quite frustrating since I ended up needing a CPAP before I could get clearance.

I actually called them and spoke with Donna. I told her I was done with everything and asked if she had everything she needed or did I need to call someone and get her paperwork. She said she would check her file and let me know. The next day she called with a date. She's always so busy and doesn't mind the call, so I'd call her if I were you. Maybe someone didn't give get what she needs and you can help the process. Don't be afraid to call. Donna is awesome.

I am planning to go to Alexian in Elk Grove. It is closer to my house so easier for family to pick me up. I start the pre-op diet this Monday.

I'm sure they're just as great in Elk Grove, I think it's an overall philosophy regarding excellence in patient care. The pre-op diet isn't all that bad. The first day you feel like your triumphant, second day is "I got this", then on the third day you feel it. Headache, tired, yucky. After that I was fine because you start seeing the scale move. I lost 10 pounds on the pre-op. Try to mix it up, they should have given you a list of different things to mix in, do it or you will get bored. Also, as you go the shakes will start to taste sweeter and sweeter. I have a really hard time with them now post-op. I've switched to Muscle Milk light, they don't taste overly sweet and they have great Protein.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
