Had my band put in yesterday. They only let me have ice chips - they left it empty & Ill have my first fill in 6 weeks. Did anyone else find it was painful when they drank for the first time?

Hi Christy, congratulations on your band! If you can't get Water down you need to let your surgeon know ASAP but for many if us that initial tightness is from inflammation that will go down soon. Hope that's helpful! I definitely enjoyed my Popsicles those first few days, as well as warm tea.

Maybe from the breathing tube? My throat was slightly sore the first day from that. I quickly learned plain Water was easier than Crystal Light Lemon. Ouch!

I had a lot of problems drinking for the first week. I would take a sip, get a horrible tight chest feeling, then a glug glug and it would go down. Once I finally got in to see my surgeon, he accessed my port and found 1cc in the band they hadn't intentionally left there. They fill the band and remove it (although some intentionally leave some in) to check for leaks before they seal you back up. That 1cc was enough to make me too tight. It couldn't hurt to call your surgeon or liaison and let them know you're having probs. Good luck and congrats!

You were intubated with a breathing tube. Your throat is just irritated from the tube.

I'm on liquids for another 10 days then move to puréed foods. My doc called to check on me this morning & said it's normal, especially where the gas pains are in my chest. I'm just taking small sips.

I have the same issues. I am 8 days post op and I have been in so much pain that I am starting to regret this choice. Today is the first day my shoulder hasn't been hurting. But I still have pain in my upper stomach. Anyone else feel the same way or having any words of wisdom?

Do you mean in the stomach area as in near your sternum or do you mean your actual stomach? Describe the pain?

Thanks Erin. I will keep you in mind.

2muchfun- it's hard to describe but I can't bend. Have a hard time sleeping. I have to sleep sitting up. I have been to the ER twice and they can't find anything wrong.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
