What to do for pain relief...

Recommended Posts

Prior to being banded I was on NSAIDS and Darvocet (sometimes even Dilaudid) for pain relief for my legs and feet. My bones fracture easily and most everything is held together with plates and screws now. Obviously after being banded I can't take any of those. Other than tylenol what do people take for pain from other issues, accidents or injuries? I can use lydoderm (sp?) pain Patches but I can't cover myself from knees to toes. I assume as I near my goal weight this will get better but until then...What? I would appreciate any suggestions. I am sure my PCP will call in a prescription for whatever I suggest but he is quite unfamiliar with the band and doesn't know what is acceptable.

Thanks

After my surgery I was given liquid Lortab. It killed the pain, but the taste was terrible. From what I know about Darvocet, you can still continue to take it, but you will have to get a pill crusher so not to get stuck. You can use applesauce or yogert to cut the taste of the crushed pill. Good luck!

Have you discussed your personal situation with your surgeon? He should be the best one to know what the surgery will allow for pain medication, and what precautions to take. For instance, when I have to have pain meds, I am usually given Demerol, due to multiple drug allergies, but when I was banded they gave me Mepergan Fortes (sp?), saying it was the Demerol, with a stomach calming agent as well, that it would be easier on my stomach. I never took any---didn't need it, but I don't have the chronic pain issues you do. My thoughts would be to get a list of approved pain meds from the band Dr., to take to the primary Dr. Maybe as your weight goes down you will need less!!! What wonderful incentive!!!

Cosean...there is no reason you should be forced only with tylenol as an option. We send our patients out with vicoden(lortab), percocet and occassionally darvocet due to allergies. Drs dont care to give darvocet too often due to the long term effects it has and the effects it has on older adults. Hope this helps. Call your surgeon and talk to him. If he isnt willing to help...go talk with your physican and go over your allergies and have him give you something for the pain. Liquid has nasty after taste but goes down easily. The pills can be crushed and put in applesauce or yougert etc. Good luck with getting your pain controlled soon!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
