This is probably such a ridiculous question. But. I was invited to a wine tasting. I'm three weeks post op. I was going to call my surgeon in the morning and figured I'd come here first. Is there any reason I shouldn't have wine now? I've moved on to mashies and have tolerated them well. Should I stay away to be safe?

Well... I can't pass judgement as I had a drink or two around that time as well (maybe just at two weeks? can't remember).

Anyways, be careful - you're eating much less, your alcohol tolerance will probably be lower. You really should have a DD. (yeah yeah yeah, you need to have a DD whenever you drive, but it's crazy how much different it is now).

I like to do little wine tastings on the weekend at Total Wine. It's also interesting to keep track of how many oz's you drink and how many calories you consume from just a little tasting. While wine is good for you to a certain extent, it's a lot of empty calories. One event like this won't kill your journey but try to minimize what you drink if that makes any sense.

Hope this makes sense. My surgeons notebook didn't really have anything in there about alcohol this close to surgery. If your doctor says this is wrong, follow your doctors orders above mine :). Have fun.

As long as it's just tasting you should be fine. It does seem like one glass of wine or one beer inebriates me more than before band.

One of the fears I always have for newly banded or even old vets like me is drinking so much I get sick and throw up. You really must avoid all opportunities to throw up especially before you heal. You don't want to tear the sutures that hold your band in place.

I agree with 2 much. don't get drunk. you do not want to vomit with the band. still call your doctor. if something should go wrong at least he is aware what you were up to. just sip. enjoy the taste of the wine and spend your time enjoying your social aspect of your outing. 3 weeks is really quick to be testing your band, your doctor maybe on board. I had to agree to give up alcohol for a year but at Christmas time my doctor gave me the ok to enjoy my Christmas morning bailey's I have every year. so you never know what your doctor will say.

What tmf said is sound advice. Just realize that the wine might hit you quickly! Just have small sips, as in tasting! But call your surgeon's office today to get the best advice, okay! Best wishes, Karen

I would not at all drink wine so soon after surgery. (I'm assuming you are banded.) If you venture into the "graves" e.g., Bordeaux, St Emilion, Medoc.Nuits St Georges...anything rich in tannic acid (Bordeauxs especially)...that is acidic. I think the other replies are dealing with the effect of alcohol on your brain, but I personally would not want to be putting tannic acid in a newly-operated upon stomach. You are still healing, you want to baby that area. Again, I would not do this so early out of WLS, because I'm very fearful of doing anything to put my band at risk.

As a Certified Wine Specialist, remember wine tasting includes spitting out the wine. Social drinking includes swallowing the wine. It's actually my job to do wine tastings, some tasting events I've gone to include up to 40-60 wines in the course of 3 hours. If I didn't spit it out, I be pretty hammered by the second round. So having spoken to my surgeon on this very subject, he recommended to continue to spit them out and don't eat while drinking. The only way to comply really is to spit out the wine. Even if it seems like kind of a waste. You could also limit your choices to 3 or 4 samples and wash it down with Water. I actually have my next training class on Tuesday so we shall see if there are any affects I can warn about. :)

Thanks for the suggestions! I really wanted to go mostly for the social aspect. But, I think I'll pass this time. I'm not a big wine person or really any drinking in general. So, I won't miss it if I stay away for a few months.

I went to a Christmas party three weeks out one glass of white wine and was violently ill not long after drinking it. I thought it might of been too soon

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
