Milk of magnesia for constipation

Recommended Posts

Had surgery a week ago today and haven't had a bm. Nurse told me to try liquid colace, but Rite Aid only had the capsules. So she said as a 2nd choice get milk of magnesia. I'm going to take it before bed. Just wondering if it worked for anyone? She said as a last resort to use a fleet suppository, which doesn't sound pleasant at all.

Also, how often are we even supposed to be having bm's while we are on liquids?

MOM works like a charm for me. Colace really didn't help me much

Tomorrow will be a week for me also. I am going thru the same thing. I called my Dr and he told me I could take pill form Mucalax. I've took one per day for the last 3 days and today they moved just a little. Dr. said I could take what I normally did which is the Mucalax. Just don't take anything that has steroids in it. Hope it gets better for you.

Are u still taking narcotic pain med? I am 8 days post op, I take colace twice daily and Miralax as needed. Careful with MOM because it can cause abdominal cramping. Miralax works wonders, consider giving it a try. Good luck!

Thanks everyone! I took the Phillips milk of mag last night before bed and woke up to a bm. Wasn't pretty but it's peace of mind I guess lol.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
