I got weighed and measured and had my blood pressure taken, all with the bariatric nurse. Then I moved on to the surgeon and spent time with him getting a thorough physical exam and talking about wls options and what would work best for me. After that I had blood drawn for standard lab work, had my metabolic rate tested, and got tested for h. pylori. I met with the dietician to go over the RMR test results and discuss an eating plan for me going forward pre-op, as well as the schedule for nutrition classes (required by my insurance) and support groups. Then I met with the staff exercise physiologist to talk about my current level of exercise (which ranged from pathetic to non-existent) and what I would do going forwards towards surgery to improve my strength and cardiovascular health. Finally I met with the insurance coordinator to talk about my insurance requirements, what I needed to do in order to meet them, and what the process would look like/how long things would take. All in all I think it took about three hours and I came out of there very well-educated as well as confident in my choice going forward.

During my first consultation with the surgeon, he asked me a bunch of questions regarding my past efforts with trying to lose weight. He asked about my support system, my reasons for wanting the surgery, and he asked my ideal weight. We also discussed my goal weight based on my body type. The bulk of the session was the opportunity for me to ask questions. Here are some of the things i asked the doctor that may be good to bring up.

1. How soon after the surgery would I be able to start trying to get pregnant?

2. What are the risks/complications and the chances of them occurring?

3. What are the stages of the approval process and what classes/doctors appointments will i need for approval?

4. What is the average amount of weight a person my size would lose in 6 months after the surgery?

5. Why is gastric sleeve better/worse than other procedures...lap band/gastric bypass/etc?

6. What is the recommended goal weight that I should ultimately reach based on my body type?

7. What exactly happens during the procedure and how long will it last?

8. How many years experience does the surgeon have and how many patients has he lost during the operation and why? (this is a pretty hard question to ask, but i did so that i would at least know. My doctor has lost 2 patients but they were almost 500 pounds, high risk, and had multiple commorbidies and were going to die if they did not have the surgery). Since I am a low risk patient, he assured me that he had done thousands of surgeries and that i would be fine.

Good luck to you!!

I did a lot of research ahead of time, so I didn't have a lot of questions. My first consult, to be honest, was in and out like a hurricane. The surgeon went over some stuff very quickly, then I was out.

Mine was like this, too. I had the work up with the nurse, who asked questions about my health history, diet history, etc. Then with the surgeon, he explained the choices and his recommendation and I could ask questions - but I didn't have any.

I was required to meet for 3 months (1 x per month) with the dietitian, though. That was much more in depth about my previous struggles, what changes need to be made immediately, what would happen after surgery, etc.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
