So today was my final appointment with the surgeon to schedule my surgery! I am SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

However, my mother just informed me that she thinks I need to recuperate at my sister's house because she doesn't have stairs, and my excitement just turned to dread!!! My sister has this ANNOYING SPOILED OBNOXIOUS granddaughter. Now I loooooove kids, but me and this kid are like oil and Water because I can't stand a DISRESPECTFUL KID!

I say this to say, what do you guys think about going up and down the stairs the first week after surgery? I know we are suppose to move anyway but I don't want to over do it. However, I do want to be comfy and in mown bed at my own house. It would only be to go down stairs or my lovely liquid diet drinks. Maybe I should just put a hotplate and a small fridge in my bedroom. Just kidding.

Anyway, any advice about the stairs?

sorry about the rambling about the family issue, but I am jus tso excited!!! LOL!

Hey there, I am 67 years old, spent one Monday night in dang hospital, took 1 dose of pain med when I got home, and went to the grocery store on Thursday. Yu can walk to the sink, the fridge, the bathroom and bed and do just fine! No caretaker needed. sleep downstairs on the couch one night if you feel loopy, but go home where you are comfortable. You do not need any aggravation LOL!!!! I was shopping at the mall in 7 days for a few hours. Good luck!

THIS SURGERY IS ABOUT YOU AND WHAT YOU WANT! You get to be a spoiled DIVA for as long as you want.

Tell your mother you appreciate her concern, but that you want to sleep in your own bed and that rest is the number 1 thing you need after surgery.

Stairs might be a little hairy, but it's better than suffering through terrible children.

If I could do stairs at 2 weeks with a total hip replacement, I'm sure you should be able to navigate them after this surgery. ;) Just go slow you will be fine.

I agree with the above. I'm betting the stairs won't be a problem. But just in case, before you go to the hospital bring downstairs everything you will need to sleep on the couch the first night you're home. Best wishes!

I stayed in a condo on the 2nd floor right after surgery - I had surgery on an outpatient basis (in at 6:00 am out by noon). I'm not joking when I say, I walked up the stairs 4 hours after surgery. I went up and down the stairs a few hours later when I went for a walk. Seriously, the stairs were not an issue for me - I just took them slow and held on to the rail.

Do what's right for you - you're the one recovering from surgery!

I totally agree with the other posters. We were actually just talking about this question in class last night (kaiser options program) and our instructor said stairs shouldn't be a problem. Good luck to you :)

I slept In my recliner for the first week and you probably will be most comfy there as well.

I left the hospital day after surgery and I went to the beach for a walk. :)

The following day I went to the outlet mall just to walk around. I think you are going to be just fine.

Getting up and out of the bed will be worse then the stairs. Any use of your stomach muscles is what's gonna hurt. I slept in my recliner for 2 days and was fine after that. I agree with the above. sleep at home in your own bed. It will be worth it.

The only reason I had trouble with stairs was because the pain meds had me a bit tired...by day two at home, I had no trouble with stairs as long as you take your time. I would want to be in the comfort of my own home as well...to me, it makes the recovery process that much better!!!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
