Hopefully this in the right spot, if not, I certainly apologize in advance!

I'm 27yrs old, male, and currently weigh 262lbs. I'm considering gastric bypass surgery, but don't really have a solid support group around me as some of the people closest to me are against the idea. But facts are facts. I'm 100+ pounds overweight. I take medicine for hypertension. My cholesterol is high (has been for years, but no meds). And according to realize.com, my BMI is 40. I also have a major family history of diabetes and heart trouble. In the past 5 years, I've attempted several kinds of diets: Herbalife, Body By Vi, Advocare, Soloslim, HCG Injections, and traditional diet and exercise. All of which have yielded failure. I'm the heaviest I've ever been and want to put a stop to this before it gets too far out of hand.

Again, I apologize if this isn't the right place for this topic, but I'm just looking for thoughts and opinions as to if gastric bypass would be right for me?

Welcome. As far a support, this is the place. Sounds to me like you've done some research. Have you had a conversation with your PCP about surgery. He/she can recommend a good surgeon in your area who specialized in bariatrics, they will also have to give medical clearance after you've done all your pre-requisites. Gastric Bypass is what I'll be having due to my medical history. RNY is good for obese people with conditions such as Diabetes, HPB and high cholesterol, all of which I have. According to research I should be off meds shortly after surgery - looking forward to that. Good luck to you, ask all the questions you have, the people here are awesome and very supportive.

I'm yet to talk to my PCP. I want to schedule to talk with him, but I'm a little nervous he'll try to talk me out of it and won't refer me. I've only been going to him for a year so I'm concerned he'll think I'm crazy.

Welcome welcome welcome..... Like sugarfree stated you are in the right place. This the best support system you can have. Talk with a Dr. and see what they recommend. My family wasn't supportive at first because I am a very healthy at the time 335lb woman and they thought I would be ok. Of course their all skinny, LOL. I had to sit them all down and explain my struggle and why I truly chose this. Just a suggestion and I wish you many blessings on whatever you chose!!! ;-)

Thanks, Janie and SugarFree! I most definitely want to talk to my doctor and get his opinion. I'm wondering, do doctors/surgeons tend to work with what you desire or more of what they recommend or a little of both? I mean, I want to have it done, especially for preventive measures, but, they may not see it that way? Make sense?

Makes a lot of sense!! If you are seriously considering it; go for it! Just research a bariatric doctor in your area and they will give you the best advise.

Many doctors (and more all of the time) are very supportive of bariatric surgery for their patients who qualify. Particularly PCP's that have patients that have had bariatric surgery and so have seen the truly remarkable results that are possible. But there are still some doctors who are not up-to-date on the surgeries and others (unfortunately) who are simply biased against obese patients. You can read stories of all three "types" right here on the forum.

You're on the right track. Discuss it with your PCP. Tell him/her why you think it would be the right choice for you and listen to their response and their reasoning for being for or against. Doing your own research is also extremely important. There is a lot of great information online including this forum. There is also a lot of misinformation online so choose your sources carefully. Harvard Public Health, mayo Clinics, WebMD, National Institutes of Health, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Institute of Medicine, the food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization are all excellent sources of information and there are many more.

RnY and vertical sleeve are the most effective treatments known to medical science for obesity, type 2 diabetes and more than 30 comorbidities associated with obesity. Your PCP and/or your surgeon may recommend one surgery over another based on your medical history and your current medical status. If there is no compelling reason favoring one over the other, your surgeon may leave the choice up to you (mine did). Both surgeries are safe and effective and...

You're gonna love the new you!!

Thanks so much for your informative response, DLCoggin. I also checked out your weight figures and it gives me hope that you and I are statistically similar.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
