starting to get cold feet

My surgery is Monday and im starting to panic!!! Im scared of the surgery itself plus the fear of not getting enough Water and protein.....I don't want my nerves get the best of me and have me back out....I've wanted this surgery for so long and worked so hard to get to this point to have my own fear make me back out at the last minute.....did anyone else feel like this right before surgery? ???

I had the same feeling in the pre-op area... almost got dressed and walked out...

Everyone has to make an informed choice. Its a big decision. Nothing wrong with postponing to take some time to think about it if you think you need to. I would rather see someone wait a few extra weeks and make the right choice for them, then rush into something they regret.

Had VSG on Monday... just came home today! Feel great!!! Yesterday was pretty rough. The anesthesia wearing off is the worst I think> I also was retaining urine (not unusual with general anesthesia).. I needed a catheter to drain my bladder. The stomach spasms are no fun but the meds are effective at controlling them. I just ate a greek yogurt and am sipping on a Protein shake... no problems what-so-ever. I am feeling blessed. I think what you are feeling is normal and this site has helped me so much. Good luck.

You are NOT alone. I got scared the week prior and then 1-2 days before the surgery I started getting really excited about it. If you read enough posts on this board, you will find that is not an unusual pattern.

Just like you, I was in a panic about not being able to get enough fluids, get dehydrated, end up in the hospital after the surgery, etc. RELAX. It won't be as difficult as you think. As long as you sip Water throughout the day, you will be fine, at the hospital and at home.

Be mentally prepared for the first two weeks after surgery. Those were the hardest for me. The thought of having another sip of anything broth drove me to tears. But it too shall pass and soon you will be able to eat nearly everything again.

As a matter of fact, I am 8 weeks post surgery and I can eat everything basically. I have had zero rejection. I can eat nuts, salads, chicken, beef, pork, all fruits, all veggies, dairy...everything (well, haven't really had any sweets - and don't want to). The trick is to eat slowly.

This forum is an amazing support tool. Focus on the reward and don't get scared. You can do this!

Best of luck,

My surgery is Monday as well. I had my pre-admit appointment at the hospital today but I'm not getting cold feet. I am so ready for this to happen. I'm tired of being fat. Tired of having to pay extra money for larger size clothing, shoes and jewelry. Tired of not being able to cross my legs. Tired of not being able to buckle the seat belt on the plane. Tired of hurting when I bend over to tie my shoes. I am tired of the lack of sleep I get due to snoring/sleep apnea. Im tired of being tired. With the upcoming weight loss... I am going to feel better, I am going to exercise, and I'm going to feel good about my self again. Yep... I'm ready for Monday and no cold feet for me. I've had about 10 surgeries in my life and came through all of them with no problems. I don't anticipate having any problems with this one either. I have selected an excellent facility and an excellent surgeon. I got this one.

My surgery is Monday as well....still can't believe that my insurance approved it... I went in on a Thursday for my consult... really just wanted an excuse to leave work early :P ....talked to the surgeon who is very well known for his revisions in my area...by that following Tuesday his office was calling me asking what date I was available for surgery. I haven't even had time to process the thought of having this done. I don't think it will hit me until Monday morning. I am beginning to get a bit anxious because I am ready to get it over with... but I am DEFINITELY not backing out... I've prayed about it...and I'm good...can't wait 'til Monday.

I had my surgery this past Monday...finally! I had the same thoughts about backing out and my sis did her best to talk me out of it. I am now glad I went thru it cuz I keep thinking of all my reasons why I wanted this surgery. I am sore but the only time I take pain meds is when I go to bed to get a good nights sleep..I personally don't want to become dependent on them. I would be just as happy not have to eat or drink..but I am getting down my premier shakes down! good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
