Hair loss. Canvassing for Dates when it started/finished

Recommended Posts

My Hair loss started almost immediately after surgery, sometime that first week or so. My hair guy said some people have that reaction to the anesthesia. It slowed a little around 1 1/2 till month 3. Then from month 3 to 6 1/2 I had very heavy hair loss! It seems to be back to a normal rate now. I am about 8 months out. I got a haircut yesterday and he said he sees hair regrowth coming in. My hair volume is about 1/3 of what I started with. But I was lucky and started with very thick hair. About 8 years ago I donated my hair to locks of love, and I was told they had enough hair to make 3 wigs. Now my hair is on the thin side, but still in the thin/normal range according to the guy who does my hair. I started with thick fine hair, and now it is thin and fine. I would also say it seems drier and more flyaway. It is not as shiny or manageable as it used to be either.

My post op diet was clear fluids only for week one, full liquids week 2, pureed and soft foods week 3 and 4 then solid food. I have been a very slow loser and have been getting between 75 and 90 gm of Protein everyday since week 3 or 4. I also have been taking a hair and nail supplement containing Biotin since 3 weeks prior to surgery.

My thing I found to cope with hair loss is a curling Iron brush with a 1 1/2 barrel. I think the big barrel is the key. It adds lots of body and volume. It is also helping with the flyaways.

Mine started lightly around 2.5 months. I thought, ok, this is not bad. Kind of like after having a baby. But then between 3.5-4 months it started falling out fast and furious. I have/had thick curly hair so I don't think it's too noticeable, but I can DEFINITELY tell myself and mostly around the top and hairline. I am HOPING that it stops or at least slows soon and the regrowth helps. I hate even washing it because it freaks me out the amount of hair in my fingers after I am done.

I'm at 6 months out - mine started falling out at about 3 months and was falling out pretty rapidly - even my eyelashes were falling out. It has started to slow down now and my eyelashes are growing back in. I had very thick fine hair before and my hairdresser says that it's even finer now. I haven't noticed any regrowth on my head yet and it has gotten really thin on the top front part of my head. I can see my scalp (though others say they can't) and I've never been able to see my scalp without actually pulling my hair down to see a part before. I started taking Biotin 3 months before surgery and have recently started taking collagen hoping that it will help. I also have Bamboo Silica on order because I read somewhere that it really helps with hair regrowth - willing to try anything at this point!

I have a question beside Biotin what supplements did every one use to help with Hair loss.< /p>

My doc also said Folate in addition to the Biotin and to make sure you get the minimum Protein.< /p>

I hear ya.. Just bought myself a 'Babyliss Big Hair'.. Hoping that will improve things.. Although, i don't know how a rotating brush with ceramic barrel will be that good for my hair.. But, worth a shot. If it's going to go, it's going to go. Then, it'll be Madam Revs, circa 2007 - Short bobbed hair again... Hurrumpf... :(

My brush doesn't rotate. If someone can tell me how, I'll post a pic of it from my iphone.

I have dreadlocks that I've been growing for four years. It's been quite a commitment and I'm soo afraid of any of them falling out. I'm hoping somebody who's been out of surgery for a while with dreadlocks can post here so I can hear about their experience.

Out of interest and as we're talking about about it...

Has anyone here used Minoxidil for their hair loss?

I bought 5% Spectral UHP a while back and pre-surgery, in preparation, but have been reading that it accelerates hairloss in the short term, that it works, but the hair is fine and downy and then, as soon as you stop using it, the new hair falls out?

Anyone had any experience of this?

I have fine, thin hair it started falling out around month 4 and stopped about month 11 when I upped my calories from 800 to 1,100-1,200 a day. I started taking Biotin before my sleeve and have always gotten my Protein in. It's coming in curlier than before, I don't think it will ever be what it was before the sleeve. I think that's a small price to pay for being thin and healthy!

For what its worth I have luckily not starting losing my hair yet and I am at just over the 3 month mark for surgery. I attribute this to the use of Wen hair products. I survived a pulmonary embolism in December 2009 and was on blood thinners for 2 years!!!! As you can see by the exclamation points wasn't very happy with that :) Anyways, the blood thinners made my hair come out like crazy so I started using Wen because while recovering from embolism I watched QVC - a lot! LOL. So fast forward 2 years since I came off the blood thinners and my hair is almost twice as thick as it was before I began taking the blood thinners. I also take Biotin (5000 mcg) everyday - started that several months before sleeve surgery. I am keeping my fingers & toes crossed that the hair will stay in my head but like Madam if it starts to fall then I am going for a very short bob, except my style will be circa 2009 :)

My hair is thin, brown, and straight now. I was born with thick, curly red hair. At 65 I am still not grey at all. My beard is grey but I color it so it doesn't look like I color my hair, which in warped macho reasoning seems the more masculine thing to do.

Off the subject, do you guys notice the hair ads at the side? The content driven ads are pretty interesting. I wonder if we could start a thread about vampires and get ads from the Transylvania Tourist Bureau? :D

Mine started last month at 4 mts out. I'm going crazy...when will it end?! Mine comes out in clumps, especially when I wash and blow dry and when I run my hand they my hair! I've also noticed my eyebrows are going away, so much that I have to pencil them in! I have very thick hair (thank goodness), so only me and my hairdresser see it! Geez, I hope it ends soon!! It's frightening!!

Mine started around 8-9 weeks post op. Stared slow. Then around 4 months it really picked up. 9 months post op I chopped it into a pixie to get rid of all the damaged hair and haven't had any issues since.

Mine started at about 3 months out (early January) and was pretty bad for about two weeks. Now the loss has let up a little, but a lot still comes out. I don't wear my hair long anymore, its bobbed to about chin level. I'm a little bummed that its thinning but I'll survive. :) The Biotin will help the quality of regrowth and I'm going to add Omegas to help also. Also fresh fruits and veggies. I do notice my skin (hands, especially) is looking kinda dry and wrinkly.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
