How Skinny Is Too Skinny?

In our weight conscious society and a generation of obese children, it’s easy to begin placing one’s worth on their weight. In fact, girls especially are obsessed with the scale and feel judged according to their weight. It’s common to see morning news anchors or talk show hosts growing thinner and thinner. There comes a point, as with any obsession, when you cross the line between looking good and looking unhealthy. The host of Lifetime Television’s show, “How to Look Good Naked,” recently was quoted as saying “Zero is not a size, it’s a warning sign.” But is size zero perceived as a warning sign or as a status to attain? A survey taken among random ages asked women if they would give up five years of their life to be thinner. Many of them said a very loud, “YES.”

Most people know when they look good and feel good. They can also tell you what their weight is when they feel their healthiest. Very rarely is that weight correlated with being too thin. Most people feel best when they have enough weight to help them feel energetic and vibrant, but not too much, which can cause fatigue, sore muscles, and joint pain. The body gives warning signs when you are too thin. Below are a few of those warning signs.

  1. Having a body mass index of less than two to three points below what is normal for your height and weight.
  2. Suffering from anemia or a lack of Vitamins and minerals can be a sign of excessive binging and purging to lose weight.
  3. For women, irregular menstrual cycles or no cycles can be a sign of being too thin.
  4. Having dark circles under your eyes, or poor skin color are signs of malnourishment due to starving to be thin.
  5. Feeling dizzy or confused are both signs of not eating.

Self-esteem is built on how we feel about ourselves. For women, body image is a large contributor to developing a healthy self-esteem, but it is minimized if the child has interests and achievements in other areas. Parents play a huge role in encouraging interests and supporting their child’s activities. It is not men as much as it is women ourselves who objectify our bodies. We critique our bodies and our friends’ bodies, and feel judged because we may feel we too are being critiqued. Children grow up hearing their moms lament about being too heavy, or not being in shape. Before the child is eight they are concerned with their weight, and how they compare to their friends.

If you notice your child is focusing more and more on weight, and less and less on their attributes, it may help you to help them focus on the healthy habits that will lead to healthy self-esteem. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Find groups or activities that share your common interests.
  2. Worry less about weight, and focus on a healthy exercise and diet plan.
  3. Educate yourself and have a career goal and dream.
  4. Befriend rather than compare yourself to women of all ages, careers and ethnicities.
  5. Focus on what you want, instead of how you look compared to your friends.

When parents join their child and the family works as team to help each member succeed, weight becomes less of an issue and healthy living becomes more.

i wish the world felt like i do now..esp since i took it for granted..*my health*....what matters is one being healthy....not skinny....i hate reading people saying i want to be skinny/thin....being healthy is so very important..

I personally do not care that much what the scale says, and BMI's are very unscientific....

Every month or so I pay a Fee to have a complete Body analysis done, primarily concerned about my Body Fat % Index....

It was due to high fat % that was the root cause of my Coronary Artery Disease, Heart attack, and Circulation problems in my extremities and carotid arteries causing dizziness when bending over or looking straight up......high risk of strokes, waiting to happen....

If I were to follow the scale and BMI charts, I am still categorized as "Overweight"....but my Body Fat % is well within normal limits, actually in the "Fit" range....

So the excess weight is not fat, but Muscle.

To loose any additional weight would not be healthy, and perhaps dangerous...even though the scale says I should.

And all my medical issues have been reversed....

Health was my #1 priority. Weight loss the perk. In a perfect world weight wouldn't be an issue. Alas, welcome to our imperfect world.

The title of this article (lightly) rapped a ruler over my knuckles, because I've been dealing with "you're getting too thin" remarks from friends and coworkers while I still struggle to get used to seeing a skinny body in the mirror. My surgeon assures me that I'm not too thin. I don't have any symptoms of malnutrition and am enjoying dozens of benefits of better health, but skinny still doesn't feel right to me. At the same time, I'm terrified that Fat Jean will take over again sooner or later.

Mary Jo, do you think that the longer we live with a distorted body image and the shame of obesity, the longer it takes us to recover? Do you have any tips for how I can achieve a better balance with being too skinny and with finding and accepting my "happy weight"?

I think that society as a whole has accepted higher weights as "normal" for normal folks (as opposed to models and movie stars) so a healthy weight can look too thin to our friends and family. It also probably makes them compare their own bodies to yours and they realize that they also could stand to lose a few. I think it leads to some mild discomfort and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your own health or appearance.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
