how soon can I go back to work

Recommended Posts

I really need to plan. I won't be able too take too long off of work--mostly because a large part of my income depends on commission. How long will it be before I can go back to work? Will it be very obvious (sp) to my co-workers that I had the surgery?

I'm very worried about what I will tell my coworkers because they will expect me to go out to lunch? Could anyone comment on how to answer questons from people who are not very close friends or family?:help:

Hi Monkey, you should be okay alone after surgery. Just make sure you have all your post surgery supplies like your foods in the house. You will be a little sore to get in and out of bed. As far as being off of work, I had my surgery on a Tuesday and was back the following Monday without a problem. I would say 5-7 days is okay to take time off. Good luck to you. You will love being banded.

Hi Monkey and welcome! Use the search function found on the blue bar in the top 1/3 of the page and you'll find TONS of threads about the return to work question. It seems to be different for everyone, reading through som other threads might give you an idea of what different people have done.

Here is a link to a thread that also has a Poll on it, pretty cool!

Monkey,

I was operatedon the 28th , thought I would be back on march 6th, but winded up going back on the 12th. i have a long drive on a very heavily traveled road, so didn't feel good enough to drive the first week back. But drove this week and I feel great. Each person is different. My case, body turning 45, but my mind thinks I am 20 (LOL). You should have someone there when you first come home from hospital. but next day, you may be fine, depends on how soft your bed is and how low to the ground. Because i had some pain getting in and out it helped to have someone there.

Hi monkey! I was off work for a week. Went back today in fact. Was tired and sore at the end of the day but no significant problems.

Other than my ride home from the hospital I was on my own. Make sure you have everything you need prior to your surgery. and make sure that you have everything you need accessible from standing or sitting level...you won't really be able to bend for a while, and certainly not the first few days. Also, get slip on shoes-tying laces is hard.

Ummm...I slept in a chair for the first couple days which made getting up and down worlds easier. Good luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
