My 1st visit with surgeon!

Recommended Posts

So today I went to see my surgeon. I've known him since 2010! He knew me right away. He walks in and says "Hey Miss prego with the bad gall bladder!" And I was 8 mos preg with my baby when he did my gall bladder. Comforting for ur dr to remember u after not seeing him in 3 yrs and he hadn't seen my chart.... It was in the room with me!

So we talked. He agrees that I can have RNY in sept! Yay!!! I have a month. Not exactly a date but I will settle for a month. He tells me that I have to have open RNY cause I have 5 other surgery scars on my tummy. So ok, I'm good with this!

After checkin my belly out, he tells me that I have not one but 2 hernias that he needs to repair while he has me open and asleep. So I that's gonna add a lil more to my surgery than I wanted but whatever. I surprised him when I had all the info I have learned from this site. It was a great feeling going in so prepared. He then gave me a folder of 55 pages and told me to read over it and write down any questions I have and call his nurse and she will be happy to answer anything we wanna know! Impressive to me!!!

So after my informative appt, I went and met my bariatric coordinator, she was super sweet. She set up all my classes and the psych eval, dietician, and my excercise coach appts. I take 3 classes in feb and 1 in March. And I was told that January counts as month one of the process! Great news!!!

Over all it was a fantastic appt, and my dr says it will be a great journey and he feels I will do super! Woot woot!!! I'm feeling totally stoked! :)

DL,

I gotta tell ya... I've never been been so excited about something so great in my life! I haven't shared a lot about my personal self, but here's my personal motivation ... Starting in October of 2013, I got really sick. I have always been an asthmatic but when I got "sick" we found out that I have copd, asthma, and emphysema. They also diagnosed me with interstitial lung disease. They don't have a cause other than my weight and they fact that I have smoked for the last 20+years. But like the drs have told me, it's not the cigarettes that have suddenly brought this on.... It's due to the weight increase in the last 6months that I have gained because of the steroids that they had me on for the asthma flare ups.... Well the weight rose due to steroids, then the breathin got worse, and the next thing I know I'm on oxygen and using a walker! I'm 37 yrs old!!! That's too young for all that nonsense!

Needless to say, I'm a fighter for my own health. I have battled many illnesses in my life and I always pull thru them. So that being said I asked my pcp what can I do to make this all change? She told me that the only thing that was going to really give me the tools (since I am already using the gym, and walking daily with my walker 1/2 mile one way, and I'm watching my diet, is going to be me looking at bariatric surgery. She said that it would help me with over eating due to steroids. (I'm constantly starving with em).... So I started y own research and talked to the surgeon, and he told me that this was my only option or I am going to continue to gain! Ugh! No way!!! I don't wanna be the fat mom sitting on the side lines watching my kiddos grow up! I wanna be the mom chasing them on the soccer fields again like I used to!!!

So dr custer and I talked yesterday and he said I have a great passion for my health as well as my kiddos, and he can't wait to work with me! I'm so blessed to have a great surgeon!!! Like I told him, I am so into my own health, simply because if I don't take charge of it.... No one else is going to and my babies will grow up with no momma! So it's time to pull my boot straps up, put my big girl panties on, and do this for myself and my kids! I'm so passionate about this .... That I can't put it into words. I just hope it shows as much as I feel it!

Look at these 3 (of 6) faces and tell me you couldn't help but be passionate about living .... If for no other reason... THEM! :)

How is everything going misty?

Hopefully things feel like they are falling into place.. Things move quicker than you think. I have an upper GI to go and then submission in March to insurance! This has been exciting I started in Sept. 2013 so by time all said and done it will be 8-9 months it is totally worth it.. I am scared of all the changes and getting approved or not, but I do keep the win that I was willing to go for it and the changes I have made now will last no matter the outcome!!!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
