Mirena slows weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 6 months out and decided to have the mirena put in about two months ago. Since then, I've only lost about 10bs. Im starting to believe that the mirena has slowed my weight loss significantly. I'm definitely not done losing weight and I am now considering having the mirena removed. I also noticed my hair starting falling out after the mirena was placed, thankfully I have thick hair.< /p>

I was doing great until the mirena, down 70lbs before I had it placed. I specifically asked the doctor if it could pose any problems losing weight and I was told no. Anyone else experience problems with the IUD after surgery?

sw 272, current 195, 5'6.

I have Mirena and so far so good. All MD's I've discussed this birth control with seem confident that it does not cause weight gain.

I just made the phone call to my doctor to set up an appointment! Wanted it out yesterday, but it'll be the end of next week. It can't come soon enough!!

Besides not losing weight, it's painful during intercourse...ready to be mirena free!

I had a new mirena inserted right before my wls and I had and have no trouble with losing or gaining weight. It was a big concern for me but I was having a lot of bleeding due to menopause and after the surgery, I bleed some and then it stopped completely. haven't had any bleeding for the last 18 months... Love it.... :P

I have had the mirena for 4 years now and I'm not having problems with weight loss. Now pain after it was first inserted is a different story. I think my body tried really hard to reject it. I could feel what I thought were the strings pulling all the time. Even went in twice to have them trimmed. Intercourse was painful for a little while. After my body finally adjusted things got better. I no longer feel it during intercourse or otherwise. Maybe your body just needs time to adjust.

My nutritionist and my OB both say that although Mirena doesn't cause weight gain, patients do complain about not being able to lose. My OB said roughly 60 percent of her Mirena patients complain about trouble losing weight. I have one but am having it removed soon.

Waiting at the doctors office to have my mirena removed. Decided to double check my weightloss progression on MFP...down only 2lbs in the last month. I know this is the right decision now! Still have about 50lbs to go. Ready to jump start my loss again!

Oh yeah-slowed my weight loss and took my libido in the toilet. The doctor also paired it with estrogen patch stopped that quickly, my appetite went thru the roof. Did stop my periods. I'm now menopausal. Will be coming out soon. Good Luck

Just an update...I've lost 6lbs since having the mirena removed three weeks ago. The last and final month I had the mirena in, I only lost 3lbs total.

It's made a huge difference having it out. My hair isn't falling out anymore and I'm not craving bad food. I'm so glad I made the decision to have it removed...ready to get to goal!! Only 9lbs till my next goal...175.

I've had the mirena since two years before my sugery - and my loss has been significantly slow as well. I wonder if there could be a link there ... Keep us posted. Thanks for the information!

I've had my Mirena IUD for around 2.5 years, I'm three months out of surgery and down a little over 50lbs. Maybe that's slow by some standards but I'm happy with it (half way to goal!!) and my birth control.

Bump! Hows it going so far with weightloss? Did things speed up? I had my mirena inserted when I was 1 year post op. In less then 6 months I have gained 10-12 lbs Have done pretty much everything to lose it. Plus I've been a little emotional roller coaster. Oh yeah, my face and hair is always oily. I've had the clearest skin my entire life and now I have acne. I have an appointment to have it removed this Saturday so I have my fingers crossed I loose those 12 lbs.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
