Band has slipped

Recommended Posts

:phanvan First of all I would like to say this is a wonderful site. I have learned more about my band in the last couple of weeks than I thought possible. Until then I had felt pretty much alone. I was banded on 6/8/06, I found out on 8/19/07 that my band has slipped. I go back to the doctors in two weeks. I feel very uneasy sitting around here with my band like this.. concern that it can slip more if that is possible. Does anyone know if I am supposed to be doing liquids? Dr. told me to eat low fat so I dont gain any weight back... My band looks like it slipped a few inches down on my stomach and is straight across. Until this, I had really good success with losing weight, lost 78 lbs with 22 to go. I dont know what to do, should I have the band removed and try losing the last myself or should I have a new put in if it doesnt move back. Is it even possible for it to move back up? If anybody has any answers I would greatly appreciated it....:think

Are you having any symptoms? When I had a slipped band, I couldn't eat anything, so that basically forced me on liquids-which were also hard to get down. It depends on how bad your slip is, how you feel and what you can tolerate. I personally would do liquids or mushies to prevent further damage. I hope you are better soon.

I can basically eat anything now, dr completely unfilled me. There must be different types of slippage. I would think if you could not eat or get anything down the slippage would be that the band moved upwards, mine has moved down my stomache. Of course, I am not a doctor so I dont know for sure if there different types. It just seems to me there are alot more slippage than only 3%.

No, mine moved down. That makes it tighter because the muscle tissue is thicker and there is more of it below. I had no fill at the time of my slip. I still would recommend liquids and you want any swelling to go down and don't want further complications.

What thread did you want this added to?

I don't know how to move your post, but I have read where some people go back to liquids and the band will move back up . Now, that could be an instance where the band may not have slipped to far, so it may depend on the severity of the slippage. Your doctor should have advised you more about it. I would call them and ask more details. Hang in there with the dieting. You have done so well, I wouldn't want to see you lose any ground.

socalgal3,

I see that you have been rebanded, how is it going for you? Is there more of a possibililty for your band to slip again? Did you think about not getting rebanded?

I didn't actually get re-banded, just repositioned. They told me there was a 50/50 chance when they went in of saving it or removing it. The doctor said, if I can save it, do you want me to? I said yes without hesitation. Sometimes I want to rip this thing out of me, but for the most part, I am happy. Yes, there is a chance of re-slip, but my surgeon said he put extra stitches to lower the chance of a reslip. I am maintaining right now because I have no fill. I hope to be filled next week and the loss will start again.

So before you had your band totally unfilled; were you constricted to the point of not being able to keep anything down? If so and you were totally unfilled.......sometimes if the slip isn't too severe after waiting a couple weeks you might be able to tolerate a small fill....or just enough to help you maintain. I had a slip back in Sept. and went with 1.0 fill for a couple months and then went up to 1.9 which held for another couple months and now i have 2.2 and am doing ok. Sometimes the stomach actually slips up thru the band due to PB'g etc and it will go back in place.....mine seems to have.............

I think a slip can sometimes heal on its own with an unfill. Is that what you are currently doing? Other than that, I would vote to try and keep your band or get a new one. It is going to be very difficult to lose the rest of your weight not being banded. Good luck.

Before I had my unfill, I was not constricted to the point of not keeping anything down. I just had some pain. They told me my esophagus was swollen and it needed to rest. My only instruction was to take Maalox. I went back in January after I had horrible heartburn and couldn't keep anything down and was told I was slipped. At that point, since I had no fill, it was determined that repositioning surgery was required. I guess if they catch it early, you are lucky or whatever, it may go back into place.

Actually, before I had my unfill, I was able to eat just about anything, even a half of sandwich with whole grain bread. I have only thrown up a couple of times, once when I had something stuck after my first fill and twice after my last fill. So throwing up was not a huge factor in my slipped band. I have noticed yesterday and today is seems I have more restiction, I am hoping maybe my band is moving a little up. It could be withful thinking too. I would like to thank everybody for there input....It has made a difficult situation a little better.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
