Self-inflicted Hip bursitis

Recommended Posts

I think I accidentally gave my self bursitis of the left hip yesterday.

I rolled on it hard with my lacrosse ball yesterday mashing it, thinking it was a tight muscle. This was before my workout yesterday and the only thing I noticed at the time is the location changed (if that makes sense). By evening, I had some really uncomfortable pain there on my left hip. Still same level of pain now mid day. It is not a blocker - still able to do most things - but, it is fairly uncomfortable, I've lost mobility in the hip and I have a sneaking suspicion I broke something about about the bursa sack, just do not have an concrete details ( perhaps broke it away muscle).

Here is some medical info (nice chart showing location):

Should I just ice it? Do you think it will fix itself? Any need to be concerned about infection or inflammation?

Thanks for any answers or insight.

Fiddle,

I am currently in physical therapy for right hip pain. Saw the doctor for the first time in February 2013 had therapy and got a cortisone shot.. Diagnosis was trochantor bursitis. Got better but still felt some restriction in mobility. Got really bad again and last Thursday got another shot and started another round of physical therapy. Doctor said my hip socket is deep, has arthritis and the labrum is starting to calcify.

One thing that helps me is to make sure my hips are in alignment. Even if one side is out by a 1/4" it can be painful. Not sure if my symptoms and problem are the same, but is sounds similar to me.

I have had terrible hip pain since I was a teenager, my favorite hip opener in Xfit is to take the huge rubber band, loop it around a pole then step into it. bring the band up high, deep inside the hip crease then stand as far away as you can, pulling the tension as taut as possible, the lean forward so that the band is supporting all of your weight, driving into the socket. Hurts like a mutha, but nothing else opens my hip up like that.

Sounds like your hip and my left foot are in cahoots, this is just what happened to my foot this week. I have no idea if it is plantar f. or a torn arch or what. I'm currently rolling it out on a tennis ball. As for you and icing, you are only supposed to do ice/heat in the first 24 hours, after that you can damage yourself.

I would put some ice on it and you have no relief in a couple of days I would go the doc and get it checked out.

On the subject of hip pain, whenever I sit on the couch in my favorite comfy position (legs bent and feet up on the couch to my left)my hip will often get stuck and I am in extreme pain and usually need help hobbling around until my hip unsticks itself, if that makes sense. No idea what causes it but it sure does hurt.

Globe - thanks for your advice. You are right, I do not think I do enough band stretching specially for opening up hips. However, I think this injury is not related to opening up hips. It is related to incorrectly mashing my left hip bursa sack. Fortunately, it is starting to feel better today. I have a lot of sprinting, wall balls and dead lifts to do today (later this afternoon) so do not need my hips holding me back.

My understanding is as long as there is inflammation ice and heat can be beneficial. The first 24 hours it should be ice to reduce initial onset inflammation. After that it should just be heat to improve circulation and healing. Now if you go out and aggravate it with too much exercise like I know you're gonna do, go back to the ice again for a few hours to prevent further inflammation.

A little tender today, but definitely manageable during my workout.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
