Tired of hearing I'm too skinny!

Recommended Posts

Soooooo.... Okay so no one ever said to me I was fat before, but I knew it and so did everyone else. But now I've been faced with people that are like "OMG! You're too skinny! You need to stop losing weight". Now I realize I've lost a little too much, and the dr has assured me this is normal. But I'm just wondering where people get off? Why do they think it's appropriate to tell me I'm too skinny, yet thought it was inappropriate to tell me I was fat?! Especially those people who aren't in my close circle of friends! My close friends are so encouraging. And I am so thankful for them, but I'm seriously sick of the others who think they have the right to offer their opinions, when they don't! Grrrrrrr!!! Okay just had to vent.

I'm still fat but yeah, I agree with you. Maybe I'd smile the first time, but after that, it's really just inappropriate. People really don't need to be commenting on your weight besides 'You look great.'

It's ok, you are not the first person to vent about this and you won't be the last!

People get used to us, how we look and where we fit into their lives when we are overweight. When we change that, it brings up all sorts of emotions for them that we don't necessarily see or understand.

For me, most of my closest friends and family have yet to say "too skinny". That's because they know where I am going with this and they remember me last time I was a wee thing. So they are enjoying my size and my happier outlook rather then having an issue with it. But I know if I go too far, they'll let me know sharpish :-)

However, I have other friends who have started sucking their teeth and frowning before telling me in a pseudo concerned way that I surely must have lost enough by now. Have to say the worst comment at Christmas was a friend who said "enough, you are going to look so old if you go any further". Wow! But when I thought about it, it's the first time I have ever been smaller than her - and now it's very noticeable...

So, what do I do? I smile and let the enquirer know I am under medical supervision that I trust, then I move the conversation on. Sometimes you have to be direct if they don't take a hint. Did that to another friend recently when she said - again - that I mustn't get too skinny through little disapproving lips. I immediately said thanks for the unhelpful comment and that her comments were getting me down. She was shocked because, in her way, she thought she was showing concern and was embarrassed that that wasnt how it was coming across. But it has stopped and she has gone back to being supportive. You just got to say it as it is, nicely but firmly because some people have no idea the impact they are having.

But it's not a problem I EVER thought I would be complaining about, lol!

I have yet to experience this.. Primarily because I haven't lost enough weight and I haven't seen the majority of my close friends for the past year (been overseas).

I'm prepared for it.

Thankfully though, I don't think my friends are the types to do that to me... I don't know whether its because they care for me too much to upset me. They're intelligent enough to know that comments like that are waaaay unhelpful or, more likely, they're afraid I'll go off on one. No one likes it when I go off on one :P

I agree it's a problem I never thought I would have! So I do try to put it in perspective. I did have to tell a co worker "Thanks but with friends like you I don't need any enemies". That was in response to her saying "You are withering away to nothing. Your face is all wrinkled, now don't lose anymore weight". Amazing how rude people can be!

Crikey, that's awful! My response to that would have been 'Yes, dear, and you're a regular Rubens painting, aren't you?...'

This would have been accompanied with walking off....

What a cow!

So, as I am always the epitome of tact, may I ask how skinny you are? I snooped your profile and you have no stats! :D

Thanks y'all!! I knew I could vent here and some would understand. The people I've had problems with aren't even people I would call friends. Mere acquaintances. Lol.

I'm now at 110lbs. I was holding at about 112-115 until my son told me he was deploying. Then I started having stomach issues, which led to me dropping about 5-8 more. I didn't ever think I would be even close to this weight, but I'm perfectly happy where I'm at. I'm a short 5'3" and probably the smallest frame size there is. Lol. For my entire adult life (since I can remember) I've always been at least 40lbs over weight. My heaviest I was at 193 (which was the week before I started my liquid diet). I'll try to figure out how to update my stats. Thanks again for all the positive comments and feed back.

I think we need to have a thick skin on this one to be honest. I have been heard it for awhile that I need to stop losing weight (basically when I got under about 180). Well, over Christmas I talked to my sister and niece and told them how much I weight 145-150 - which is not skinny for someone who is 5'5". they told me i look way thinner than that so it made them feel better knowing that I am a healthy weight. I think they get a type of dismorphia - they have always seen me as obese (or at least very overwieight) so they were genuinely worried about me. their concern was genuine and loving, not mean. I also think that honestly, overall women are just getting bigger and bigger (sadly) so the new normal is pretty heavy.

I also agree that too skinny just does look old - especially for some of us. I think using photos, getting feedback from people here on this website is a good way to get objective feedback. What worked for me was losing to a goal and then letting it stabilize before losing the last 10. I think it takes awhile for your face to sorta fill back out as mine was a little old looking there for awhile...haha. Yesterday someone told me I look like I am 25 (big lie, but I'll take it!) so i am feeling pretty good about my current weight.

You are right - it's rude, but I haven't had my surgery yet and can't even imagine anyone saying that too me! Just think back to when you were fat and take it with a laugh.

Someone ask me was I dying the other day. I looked at them and just laughed. U have lost so much. I decided to only let my dad and his wife know. Only because they went with me to Mexico to have my surgery done. It's kinda hard. I knew that me losing weight people were going to get all weird because they want me to stay fat.

I just want a healthier me.

When I go to events or family functions people are always looking at what I'm eating or how much. I think at work is the worst. My coworkers all we talk about is food. And different place we have been. And what we should try. Well I have had a few episodes where I have vomited at work (Which I have done before the sleeved) and now they think I'm bulimic or anorexic. I laugh at that too. Whatever makes them sleep at night. Oh and I'm not wanted to go out because I might get sick.

I learned a while ago that the only opinion that matters is mine. Not many are going to be as happy for u but u.

hi daynadanelle

You are so right when it comes to friends, or people who you think are friends. I had what I thought was my best friend, then, when I started to lose weight she put so many obstacles in the way. When I look back she has done it over the years many times. When I mentioned this to my dietician she said that it is common. Some people like big people as friends, to massage their egos, this can be subconscious, or deliberate. It made me reconsider my relationship with my friend, all very sad, as I thought we had been best friends for over twenty years...... This friend started to tell me I was looking to skinny... Makes you think doesn't it?

i had someone yell out in the hallway at work that " i should just stop it loosing weight that is". I'm no where near goal, got a while to go. So i just smile and let it go. i feel like it their problem not mine. starting weight 267 current weight 171. My goal is at least 167 1st then 140. I'm not stuck on the things that is said when i receive mostly positive.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
