Lots of liquid normal?

Recommended Posts

I am third day post op from sleeve surgery. I am able to drink quite a bit with no full feeling at all. I had two sugar free popcicles back to back yesterday and probably could have handled another. Has anyone else experienced the same with liquid? I expected a much more full feeling while drinking.

Oh yeah. I'm 8 days out and this majorly stressed me out. I thought I was doing something wrong or damaging/hurting myself. Everyone told me to relax, but it wasn't until I spoke to my doctor that I did. I believe the exact quote was, "Count your lucky. Most people are dehydrated right now. You'll fill up when you start eating." And that has been true.

I didn't have any problems getting fluids in starting on day 2 post op. liquid only stays in your stomach for a few minutes, so you should be able to drink an ounce of Water every 4-5 minutes. That's 12 ounces an hour, so not hard to get in the 64 for someone not having any problems with nausea or vomiting (which was my case). I would go walking for an hour or more Nd made it my goal to consume a 20 ounce bottle of water while I was walking which helps too. Hardest part was just remembering to drink water (still is).

I've had zero problems drinking, and put away two bowls of broth and a cup of hot tea straight out of surgery. I had no trouble reaching Fluid goals immediately, and I took in 85g of liquid Protein on the first day I was allowed (day 3). I was so worried something was wrong that I talked to my surgeon and his nurse and his office partner and anyone else who would listen, but everyone assured me I'd feel that restriction when I started taking in actual food.

I've lost 21 pounds since surgery three weeks ago (37.7 altogether), and my surgeon attributed that to hitting those fluid/protein numbers. Hope he's right! I've just switched to the soft food stage. NOW I feel restriction, and now I'm having to really watch the clock to make sure I'm getting all of my Water in. This transition is a bit more complicated than I imagined it would be, and while I'm still not having pain from drinking, I feel much more full than I did before and am having to work harder at achieving those minimum fluid goals.

I have had the same issue. Can drink all day, but now I am starting with food. I get pain in my throat, and find that I spit up, like a baby would you know. And tjis is only after like 3-4 tbs of food. I am chewing it up for days. Anyone know when this will subside?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
