I'm on my 11th day after surgery and started the second week diet a few days ago(mashed potatoes, pudding yogurt, etc...) I take my time eating, right around 20 minutes, to make sure I don't eat too much before I get the full feeling. But I haven't gotten full off of anything I have tried. Here's the stuff I have tried that I thought should have made me feel full. 1.5 cup mashed potatoes, 1 cup oatmeal, 2 scrambled eggs. Don't know if the stuff is just passing through or if I just don't feel the sensation of being full. Is this normal?

Whoa! Did the doc tell you it was ok to eat a cup and a half of food? ?

Your stomach is swollen and numb so don't look for that full feeling just yet especially with things like yogurt.

You should be measuring and eating only a certain amount the first weeks.

For most of us it's 1/4 cup at a time..

You are a man? Your stomach is probably naturally bigger than mine but 1 1/2 cups is to much.

I am shocked at the size of your servings. I was told 1/3 c. -1/4c. in week 3. I'd also rethink oatmeal and mashed potatoes. Are you still able to get in your Protein? That should be priority #1!

I am following my nutritionist's recommendations for what to eat. I took the time to eat and thought my stomach would tell me when to stop. I thought that my portion were kind of large so I just stopped after so much.

I'm 9 days out from surgery and I'm only allowed 1 tablespoon of Protein & 1-2 teaspoons of veggies. I'm still eating in medicine cups!

You should have a diet plan to follow, Stage 1, Stage 2.....with amounts on it as well? I would call your NUT and get a copy if you cannot find yours. I'm five weeks out tomorrow and still only eating 1/4 cup!

For what it's worth - I have a plan with what to eat, but not amounts. I too, don't feel full. I get hungry - not head hunger - frequently and feel a bit lost as to what I need to be doing to not overeat but don't want to feel hungry all the time. I'm eating small amounts for safety 2-4 ounces depending on what it is. But don't feel particularly satisfied.

To be really frustrated, in addition to not feeling satisfied and frequently hungry, I'm not losing weight at less than two weeks out. Had a Protein shake with 130 calories for Breakfast 2 ounces unsweetened Greek yogurt for snack and a Protein Drink for lunch. Will have unsweetened applesauce for snack.

Am drinking 3-5 liters of Water a day.

You will be able to hold more in the liquid phase. Up to 1/2 cup of liquid in half an hour or 1/3 of a cup of a liquid food like yogurt. When you get to purée, you will start by holding about 1/4 cup and probably get to 1/3 cup by the time you go to soft foods. I'm over 7 months out and can hold about 2/3 of a cup of food at a meal. Everyone is slightly different. The most important thing is don't try to stuff yourself and don't feel like you have to clean your plate.

The physical hunger could be acid so it is standard to ask if you are taking a PPI like nexium. But it is also fairly normal during the liquid phase and passes for lots of people when they are on purée.

After talking to my nutritionist (and reading a lot about it), it seems that these full liquids just pass through the stomach for most people. When I start eating soft foods and everything after that, it should be a different story.

I'm over 2 years out and still don't eat 1 cup of anything at a time. I'm female, but I can remember being close to 6 months out and still only able to eat 4 bites of anything. The feeling of restriction was what helped me lose my weight. Hope you will get that when you start different phases. Linda

Everyone's capacity is different. Men tend to hold more than women. Tall people seem to hold more. It has to do with the length of the stomach. Your surgeon will make your sleeve the right size to accommodate your natural stomach length. There are a few rules of thumb. First, there is nothing that says you need to stuff yourself. Second, if you can hold more volume that means you can fit more veggies! Nobody seems to be able to hold a huge amount of good lean dense Protein. Third, don't compare yourself to others.

thank you so much. I am hoping once I have substantial types of food I will stay full longer and really feel the restriction. I am taking a ppi. I am definitely not stuffing myself. In fact I think I would be relieved because so far I am not feeling restricted. I feel I get hungry often. I just don't want to sip my way to too many calories a day. So far I think I'm ok calorie wise but don't want this to be a slippery slope. It took me all day and several servings to eat a 220 calorie can of soup! But just trying to figure it all out.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
