How long were you sore after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm only 3 days out of surgery and the pain seems to be getting worse. How long should I expect to be in pain? I do some walking. I seem to sleep all the time though.

I was sleeved on December 2nd, and I still have just a slight discomfort in my abdomen. Usually I feel it if I'm bending a weird way. I was also very sleepy for about the first week. It's all the medication they use during surgery working it's way out of your system. Also, most narcotic pain meds make you drowsy as well. The pain you are feeling is probably because you are more mobile, keep walking and every day you should feel a bit better!

I feel 100 percent better post op day 6. Not totally pain free but pretty close. Felt great night of surgery, absolutely awful post op day 2 and 3 and have been gradually improving since then.

Pain after surgery usually gets worse as the anesthesia gets out of your system and gets better from there.

Hang in there you will be back to normal before you know it.

I had no pain after two days and took 1 dose of pain med at home after one night in the hospital. I was in the grocery store post op 4 days. I am 67, and have more energy than I would have believed possible. One month our and I am shopping for hours.

Great question, I'm 5 days out. I'm in pain still and I'm very uncomfortable. The gas pain is the worst. I went walking in my neighborhood this morning, but I was so winded and tired afterwards. I just can't tell if it helped the gas to move. Right now until I feel better 100%, I just can't recommend this to anyone. Maybe a week from now I'll be talking a different tune.

Crap. I'm 16 days post op and still have a crazy pain next to my incision. Everything is going down well. I'm trying chicken tonight. But man that belly pain is persistent and won't go away. It's the only thing really bothering me. Any suggestions or am I just atypical?

Everyone is different. I was off my pain meds in 2 days. I had incision pain for about 8-9 days. When I went back for my 2 week post op appt my surgeon looked at my incisions and said "Wow you heal quick!". I was able to sleep on my side and stomach after about a week. Just hang in there it gets better. ????

Today I just couldn't take anymore gas pain. I got some Gas X and it has help. I read many post on here about it. It really did work. Right now I have a heating pad on my stomach. I feel so much better...so much better than yesterday. Earlier today I finally let out a GOOD cry before the Gas X. I wish everyone well.

Hi there! I was sleeved 12/17/13. First 2 days post op I was takin liquid form of Percocet every 4 hrs and it work as a magic. After that I started to prolong time between dosages and on the 4th day I was taking pain meds only at night. As of yesterday I don't take any pain meds at all. Gas pain in my chest and left shoulder still bothers me, but gets better with manual massage. Over all, I feel MUCH better since 3rd day. It will get better very soon! Please try to fallow your doctor's instructions. Feel better!

I had hiatal hernia repair along with the VSG --- pain pain pain pain until day 6 -- took roxicet around the clock and was pretty sleepy that first week out -- also moaning and groaning throughout the day

Day 11 post op today and incision pain is bearable but just feeling incredibly weak with soo many things I want to get done -- in the ER now awaiting assessments

It gets Better with time as far as pain and I'm sure same goes with the weakness but I'm def not there yet

I'm glad you posted this. I had surgery Dec. 2nd and am still having pain around my incisions, even while being sedentary. I considered contacting my surgeon but feel better after reading similar situations.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
