Constipation with extra protein?

Recommended Posts

Hi all-

I started trying to change my eating habits to prepare for life pre and post op. My surgery is not til February... I started drinking Protein shakes for Breakfast and really aiming for higher Protein in my meals and tracking what I eat. After about 2 weeks, I'm having Constipation issues! Is this because of the added protein in my diet and will I have this problem post op too? Suggestions?

Yes Protein binds you up do you have to drink more Water. I usually drink hot tea and take a stool softener once or twice per week to help.

Oh heavens, yes! I had my gallbladder out 5 years ago and have had real "dumping syndrome" problems until my WLS 3 months ago. Actually until 4 months ago when I went on the pre-op diet and also cut out coffee. I will tell you that there are days I wax poetic about the loss of dumping syndrome. But that's not everyone. Some people get dumping syndrome after WLS. I have not. I do make sure I get at least 70 oz of Water a day and that helps.

I saw a good post about someone adding dehydrated veggies to their diet to help with regularity. I know a lot of people use Fiber products to help. I haven't been so uncomfortable yet that I've tried it. But I'm tempted on the weeks when I'm stalled on my weight loss! I know--TMI.

You're prepping early and that is so awesome! Good for you! That's going to help you so much when you're post-op.

I have experienced terrible Constipation since surgery. I'm trying to get it figured out, so it's good you're working on it now. One thing I've been doing wrong is not sticking with a Metamucil or Miralax for long enough. The cycle has been: feel really uncomfortable because I haven't poo'd in a few days, take something for 1-2 days, then I'm able to poo and I stop taking the Metamucil or Miralax.

I'm going to start taking something every day so I can stay regular.

Best of luck to you!

I too have started that as well and my hopes are for July no hard set sate yet. I found a hemp seed Protein that is 12g protein and 11g Fiber I add that in and it helps.

So, I guess I will go into my Frankenstein laboratory and see if I can create a prune juice smoothie:)

I have found that the change in your diet does that. I used to go 2 times a way, now its about once every other day. Just make sure you are getting enough fiber in your diet.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
